Today marks the two-month anniversary of our Supreme Court victory in June Medical v. Russo. Here's a refresher about the decision....
On June 29th, #SCOTUS ruled that Louisiana's law, which would have required abortion providers to have admitting privileges at local hospitals, was unconstitutional.
The Court’s 5-4 decision in this case made it clear that states CANNOT use deceptive medical regulations to shut down clinics.

We recently received a long-awaited decision from #SCOTUS in our case challenging Louisiana's abortion clinic shutdown law.

While we are thrilled that #SCOTUS ruled in our favor and struck down the law, there is still so much more work to do to protect abortion access.
Our President and CEO, Nancy Northup explains what comes next in the fight to protect abortion access in the United States in her op-ed for the @washingtonpost:

#MyRightMyDecision #ActForWomen washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/…
"This insidious campaign against abortion access hurts communities of color, young people, rural communities and people living in poverty the most."

In #Florida, you don’t control your body until you turn 18, turns out! Gov. DeSantis signed a law requiring minors to get notarized approval before an abortion, because the existing "notification" law isn't flashy enough, we guess. #MyRightMyDecision 1/5 sun-sentinel.com/news/politics/…
Requirements to be a teenage parent in FL: 0
To terminate an unwanted pregnancy: ~ a million.

Garbage lawmakers say, "You're not mature enough to decide you want an abortion, but you're obvs ready to make parenting decisions about the baby we're forcing you to birth!" 2/5
Anti-abortion a-holes don’t like saying the messy part out loud, but we will. 📢📢 When teens don’t want to ask their parents for permission it’s prob because they don’t feel safe at home or possibly they are being raped/abused by their parental figure. #AbortionIsEssential 3/5

NEW op-ed from Kathaleen Pittman of Hope Medical Group for Women, the Louisiana abortion clinic that we represented in our Supreme Court case, June Medical Services vs. Russo.

If you read one thing today, make it this. #MyRightMyDecision @USATODAY usatoday.com/story/opinion/…
"For six years, my lawyers have been fighting a law that would have shut down the abortion clinic I run in Shreveport, Louisiana — Hope Medical Group for Women. On Monday, we won in the [U.S] Supreme Court, which struck down the law, meaning we can stay open for our patients."
"I wish the relentless attempts by politicians to shut down our clinic would finally stop. I know they won’t... Our win was critical because it saves the few clinics remaining in Louisiana... Over the years, I’ve watched the other clinics disappear, wondering if we will be next."

This morning, in a 5-4 ruling, SCOTUS struck down Louisiana’s unconstitutional anti-abortion law. This decision upholds the rights of abortion providers and their patients and is a win for reproductive rights. #MyRightMyDecision
This case had to do with onerous & medically unnecessary “safety” requirements which required doctors providing abortions to jump through administrative hoops under the guise of making abortion "safer". Abortion is already safe; these laws do nothing but make it harder to access
Thankfully, in 2016, SCOTUS struck down nearly identical restrictions in Whole Woman's Health vs. Hellerstedt. And today, they upheld that decision, holding that admitting privileges present an undue burden for providers and people seeking health care.

It was a COLOSSAL sigh of relief breathed by millions of women and LGBTQ people this morning across the country when the Supreme Court struck down a draconian anti-abortion law. #MyRightMyDecision

ICYMI: In a big win this morning, the Supreme Court issued a ruling in our case, June Medical Services vs. Russo, striking down Louisiana's admitting privileges law as unconstitutional. #MyRightMyDecision

A statement from our President & CEO, Nancy Northup, on the ruling:
"This is a big win that vindicates what we’ve said all along, which is that the Louisiana admitting privileges law is unconstitutional. This is a victory for the people of Louisiana and the rule of law, but this case never should have gotten this far.
We won an identical case four years ago in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, and the fact that we had to fight so hard again goes to show that nothing should be taken for granted when it comes to protecting abortion rights.

VICTORY! Today, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 AGAINST a Louisiana law that would have dramatically restricted access to abortion services across the state.

Opinion: supremecourt.gov/opinions/19pdf…
If allowed to become law, Act 620 would have shuttered all but one abortion provider in Louisiana and would create additional barriers to critical and potentially lifesaving healthcare for LGBTQ people.

A public health and constitutional crisis in one.
Reminder: Abortion rights are also LGBTQ rights. #MyRightMyDecision

BREAKING: The Supreme Court just struck down Louisiana’s clinic shutdown law. This ruling allows the state’s three clinics to remain open to continue to provide abortion care for the people of Louisiana. #MyRightMyDecision Image
However, it does little to stop the relentless attacks on abortion rights. Politicians no doubt will exploit today's fractured decision to pass even more anti-abortion laws that undermine people's rights and access to care. #MyRightMyDecision

Do you think someone should have to wait 5 years to get an abortion? Does that seem nonsensical to you? Well folks, it’s time to talk about “third-party standing”, a sneaky part of #JuneVRusso that could have huge ramifications for abortion access. 1/7 abcnews.go.com/Politics/expla…
Very late in the game Louisiana asked #SCOTUS to consider who actually has the right to sue them for their bad laws. Currently, abortion clinics can advocate on behalf of patients, but Louisiana is pushing SCOTUS to say: NO DICE, only patients can sue. 2/7 #MyRightMyDecision
Louisiana argues that abortion providers — who risk death to care for patients — don't have their patient's interests at heart. Maybe they just do it because a job without doxxing and bomb threats seemed boring? #MyRightMyDecision 3/7

20 weeks into her pregnancy, Kim discovered that her fetus had severe brain abnormalities and would not result in a healthy baby. After getting second, third, and fourth opinions from different doctors, she decided to get an abortion. goodmorningamerica.com/news/story/sup…
"I knew that I had a legal right to an abortion, but I just didn't know much about the practicalities. I assumed that I would just go back to my doctor and say, 'OK, we're ready.' I was wrong."

Now, nine years later, the situation is even worse in Louisiana.
Kim and her husband were forced to travel out of state, take time off work, secure childcare for their one year old at home, and pay for three nights in a hotel just to get the constitutionally guaranteed abortion care that Kim needed.

#SCOTUS handed down two landmark decisions this week on Title VII & #DACA. We're still waiting for the decision in our case, June Medical Services v. Russo, and the next decision day is Monday.
Our case out of Louisiana is about an identical abortion law we already won four years ago in Texas that #SCOTUS said there was no medical purpose for this law, did not benefit patients, and in essence was an underhanded tactic to shut down abortion clinics.

BREAKING: We just filed another lawsuit against Louisiana. We are challenging a #COVID19-related notice that effectively bans abortion in the state.

This is the 28th time we have sued Louisiana. We'll keep suing until they get the message. #AbortionIsEssential
Louisiana has more abortion restrictions than any other state. In 2011, there were 11 abortion clinics in the state. Today, there are just three.

Louisiana's goal here is clear: eliminate access to abortion care entirely. We won't let that happen.
We are currently litigating three other cases in Louisiana, including one at the U.S. Supreme Court. If the state's #COVID19 ban is not blocked, abortion access will be decimated in the state before #SCOTUS even has a chance to issue a ruling. #MyRightMyDecision

Actress @ElizabethBanks spoke at this morning's pro-choice @ReproRights #MyRightMyDecision rally outside the Supreme Court.

She says she's had the "privilege" of knowing she could access abortion care, but that it needs to be a "right" not constrained by state or economic class.
Today at the #MyRightMyDecision pro-choice rally in front of the Supreme Court, Richard Blumenthal @SenBlumenthal spoke directly to Donald Trump: "This is what America looks like, and America is for reproductive rights."

"America is for the principle: My right, my decision!"
Rep. Barbara Lee @RepBarbaraLee says the new case before the Supreme Court is about a law identical to one already struck down by SCOTUS.

She says the only difference is the makeup of the court with Trump's new judges, and that the law is about restricting access, not safety.

“We already won this issue 4 years ago with Whole Woman’s Health. The law in Louisiana is not different than the law in Texas. It still has no medical purpose. It still, in the case of Louisiana, would only leave one clinic to serve a million women of reproductive age.”
“So why are we back at the court? Because there are states like Louisiana and others that are in open defiance of the Supreme Court ruling and the constitution.” - Nancy Northup, President and CEO #MyRightMyDecision

Today, the Supreme Court considers Louisiana's admitting privileges law, a nearly identical law to the one SCOTUS struck down as unconstitutional in 2016. If this law is upheld, Roe v. Wade will be gutted.

What’s a constitutional right if you can’t exercise it?#MyRightMyDecision
This case is not an isolated attack. It's another effort by national anti-abortion groups to chip away at abortion rights and exert control over women and their bodies. As the Supreme Court already found in 2016, these laws don't make abortion safer, they just shut down clinics.
If this law stands, there would only be one clinic in all of Louisiana. So much is on the line, but it's really quite simple: the Supreme Court must follow precedent and strike down the law.

For everyone, abortion must be #MyRightMyDecision

We’re heading to the Supreme Court TOMORROW to challenge an unconstitutional Louisiana law that would decimate abortion access in the state. This case has far reaching implications that extend beyond Louisiana’s borders. Here’s what you need to know... #MyRightMyDecision
Our case, June Medical Services v. Russo, challenges a medically unnecessary law that requires every abortion provider in Louisiana to obtain “admitting privileges” at a hospital within 30 miles of the clinic. #MyRightMyDecision
This would allow abortion providers to admit patients to the hospital. But, abortion patients almost never require hospitalization bc abortion is so safe. It’s safer than a colonoscopy or getting your wisdom teeth removed. Neither of these procedures require admitting privileges.

1. For 45+ years, #SCOTUS has repeatedly affirmed that abortion providers can defend their patients' right to abortion by challenging restrictive laws in court. Louisiana is trying to force patients to file their own cases, an insurmountable task for most. washingtonpost.com/outlook/2020/0…
2. "...requiring patients to bring the lawsuit would mean that someone who is operating in a short time frame — while pregnant seeking an abortion — would have to sustain interest throughout a lengthy and costly litigation process." #MyRightMyDecision
