Knowledge organisers and avoiding inflexible knowledge: A thread 🧵
The @ollie_lovell and @HFletcherWood ERRR podcast on responsive teaching, got me thinking about some of the pros/cons of #knowledgeorganisers and if sharing how at @BeckfootSchool we try to mitigate
/1
inflexible knowledge i.e. students only ever encountering the knowledge in one format, their learning being 'shallow' and their #schema being overly simplistic. When we first introduced KOs, @Nikki__Sullivan, our amazing @BeckfootTL team, and I trained students to self-quiz
/2
using a very basic 'Look, cover, write, check' method. This was great to start with, because we went from students doing practically no retrieval practice under their own steam, to them at least doing something. But we soon realised that this wasn't helping students to really

@semanthicc Google isn't *shifting* toward graphs, it long ago made that shift and there's no turning back. With the Knowledge Graph in 2012, Google shifted from generating lists of ranked document summaries that might have the facts a user is looking for to doling out the facts directly.
@semanthicc And while the Knowledge Graph may not represent the whole of Google's query response real estate, the entity-based approach it engenders has impacted all of Google's search. Whatever you query, Google's now try to figure out what you *mean& and respond accordingly.
@semanthicc "Accordingly" means as much as possible providing you with the fact or resource you're asking about directly (which - to "graph-based" - absolutely requires you have a graph-like understanding of the things the user's asking about and, vitally, how they're connected).

On behalf of the Bipolar Exome project, I'm excited to announce that our analyses of WES data from 13,933 bipolar disorder cases and 14,422 controls, highlighting AKAP11 as a shared risk gene with schizophrenia is out today in @NatureGenet! (nature.com/articles/s4158…) (1/11).
The article release (almost(!)) coincides with two schizophrenia papers in @Nature from the SCHEMA consortium led by @TarjS, and @PGCgenetics (nature.com/articles/s4158…, nature.com/articles/s4158…) (2/11).
We utilise #SCHEMA to detect AKAP11 as a exome-wide significant shared risk gene for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia (3/11).

The claim by @EcoSenseNow that Google has removed him from their results for "founders of Greenpeace" raises a number of interesting (and epistemologically important) issues about the representation of facts in a knowledge graph. 1/31
Typically - and this is almost certainly the case here - the facts provided by the Google Knowledge Graph in response to a query weren't created by Google, but derived from other sources (most notably Wikipedia and Wikidata). 2/31
That is to say, in this case, the probability that any human at Google has reviewed the literature pertaining to who may be legitimately considered a founder of Greenpeace, made a determination, and populated the Knowledge Graph with that information is essentially zero. 3/31
