My son has recently discovered The Lion King, and as a result I've watched it WAY too much in the past few weeks. But that's also caused me to notice something, so let's talk about Scar for a moment.
If you're not familiar with the movie (what rock did you live under?) Scar is a lion, perfectly voiced by Jeremy Irons, who claims the position of king after murdering his brother and attempting to murder his nephew. Watching the movie in 2018, though, he feels... familiar.
To start, Scar holds a rally to pump up his followers. During said rally he shouts fantastic, unkeepable promises ("Stick with me and you'll never go hungry again!") and open threats ("You won't get a sniff without me!") that emphasize how his followers NEED him in power.
The reason for this, as Scar is very fond of pointing out, is that he's smart. He makes reference to his fantastic brainpower repeatedly throughout the film. This despite the fact that there's nothing he does that actually gives evidence to said intelligence.
(His grand plan is "Kill the royal family, claim it was an accident that just so happens to greatly benefit myself, which I was also the only witness to." What sort of criminal mastermind could possibly conceive of such an elaborate scheme?)
Scar believes that he's going to be a fantastic ruler because... why not? He literally has zero plan, just: Get power, have people fawn over me, everything works out. ("I'll be king undisputed, respected, saluted, and seen for the wonder I am!")
Oh, and I should also mention that the rally at which this all goes down includes a super literal Nazi parade from his followers.
Scar lies constantly, to everyone, foes and allies alike. He's super transparent about it too. And yet, weirdly, everyone just kinda goes along with it? The main characters central conflict is even due to Scar gaslighting him about the reason for his father's death.
Scar gains power by colluding with known enemies of his homeland. And after he seizes the throne via extremely suspicious circumstances he immediately tells everyone that they should be allies with said enemies.
After taking power he quickly attempts to erase his predecessor's legacy by forbidding anyone from mentioning him. He also destroys the environment by allowing his followers to use natural resources indiscriminately, blindly assuming it will have no ill effect.
Surprising no one, he's a TERRIBLE leader. Nobody benefits from his leadership except himself, with even his supporters getting screwed. These facts don't seem to register with Scar. He just sees himself as surrounded by incompetence.
There is a group with the power to remove him (the lionesses), but they seem pretty intent on quietly observing protocol while their homeland crumbles around them until someone shows up with concrete evidence that Scar committed a crime.
So... yeah. I guess what I'm saying is that if Disney had released The Lion King today it would definitely be seen as a super obvious political commentary.
Amusingly some people think I'm only just now picking up on classic literary themes? No, this is an extended sigh in tweet form about how a US political figure so cleanly fits an age-old villian archetype that a 22yo kids film would be seen as a form of protest if released today.
