Biggest failing of this essay is the action program, which reflects the author's opposition to all U.S. military action against Assad. They're reduced to calling for letting refugees into the U.S., something the pro-Assad left is mostly OK with. dsausa.org/the_us_turn_to… 
John Reimann, author of the DSA op-ed, published an essay by Roger Silverman on his Oakland Socialist blog back in March opposing the imposition of a U.S. no-fly zone on Assad over Ghouta.
Back in April when Trump ordered airstrikes on Assad's chemical weapons apparatus, the Oakland Socialist blog opposed military action against Assad on the grounds that the purpose of the attack was to make capitalism look good (not a joke). oaklandsocialist.com/2018/04/14/opp…
Socialists may not like it, but the reality is the only way the Syrian revolution could've avoided defeat by Assad, Iran, Russia, Hezbollah, ISIS, + Al-Qaeda is w/ the kind of robust + sustained U.S. military action they opposed and that Syrians demanded. medium.com/@_alhamra/sam-…
Who controls what in Syria today is largely a function of foreign military intervention. Daraa is likely to fall to Assad by the end of 2018 while Idlib, Afrin, and northern Aleppo remain in rebel hands is because no foreign power is willing to stop Assad+Russia in the south.
Last point: There's a whole heck of a lot more Western activists can and should do re: Syria besides demanding refugees be let in. Like restoring @statedept funding for @SyriaCivilDef for example. medium.com/@_alhamra/figh…
Another thing Western activists could do to help the Syrian revolution is primary Tulsi Gabbard by supporting @SherryForHawaii with $$$, social media posts, meetings, passing union resolutions, and so on.
