For those of you saying, “Shut up, Alyssa! You couldn’t be any more of an idiot. Women already have equal rights.”

This thread is for you, delightful people.
The ERA is a Constitutional amendment which would prohibit denying or abridging equal rights under law by the United States or any state on account of sex. #ERANow
It would make sex a suspect category subject to strict judicial scrutiny, clarifying the legal status of sex discrimination for the courts. This would prohibit sexual discrimination in the same way we have done on the basis of race, religion, and national origin. #ERANow
The ERA would guarantee equal footing for women is the legal system of all 50 states. Particularly in areas where women have historically been treated as 2nd class citizens, including cases of public education, child custody, domestic violence and sexual assault. #ERANow
The ERA will put full weight of the constitution behind employment laws relating to the prevention of sex discrimination, in hiring, firing, promotions and benefits. #ERANow
The ERA will prevent protection laws from being repealed and women’s progress from being rolled back. #ERANow
The ERA will ensure that the rights of women and girls will not be diminished by any congress or political trend but instead be a basic right guaranteed by the constitution. #ERANow
The ERA would ensure equal pay for equal work. #ERANow
The ERA will eliminate sex discrimination in the armed services.

The ERA would ensure that government programs, such as social security, do not have a negative impact on women. #ERANow
The ERA would protect women from being harmed by a policy simply because being a woman. For instance, pregnancy discrimination continues to be prevalent in the work force. The ERA would protect her. #ERANow
The only guarantee WOMEN have in the Constitution is the 19th amendment. The right to vote. #ERANow
The 14 amendment is not enough. Only an ERA would provide gender equity & offer “overriding guarantee” of equal protection for women. Supreme Court Justice Scalia has said that the Constitution does NOT protect against discrimination on the basis of gender. #ERANow
Lack of recognition of women’s equality in the Constitution perpetuates the belief that women are “less than” which leads to unequal treatment, abuses of power, sexual harassment, misconduct and assault. #ERANow
The ERA is also an economic issue. It is proven that when women earn more it stimulates the economy. Gender equality would boost the economy by over 4.3 trillion over a decade. #ERANow
The ERa will give all citizens the opportunity to reach their full potential.

And ultimately, women and men must have equal rights for democracy to thrive.
