@LubaMeader @NancyPelosi @realDonaldTrump The 270% tarrif is not a cut and dry thing. It breaks down to the fact that Canadians has a supply management system. It means that we dont overproduce our dairy. We try to provide just enough for Canadians.
@LubaMeader @NancyPelosi @realDonaldTrump We have such high tarrifs from other places due to the fact that we try to keep foreign dairy out of Canada. Not to mention we try to protect our own farmers.

We have different health standards that the US does not have. We do not use antibiotics or growth hormones in our milk.
@LubaMeader @NancyPelosi @realDonaldTrump Given the tarrifs. Canada still imported dairy worth 5x what we exported last year.

Also given everything Canada imports from the US, even with the tarrifs we still import 10% of dairy products.

The US restricts our dairy imports at 3%.
@LubaMeader @NancyPelosi @realDonaldTrump Now the US farmers get subsidies from the US government. In Canada it's the Canadian consumers that foot the bill.

The main issue when it comes to Dairy farmers in the US is there is overproduction. The US produces too much milk. We only provide a certain amount.
@LubaMeader @NancyPelosi @realDonaldTrump California and Wisconsin alone produce more than Canada combined.

So we have supply management.

Now on to tariffs.

Did you know the US also has a system to try to keep other foreign goods out of the US?
@LubaMeader @NancyPelosi @realDonaldTrump Tobacco has a 350% tarrif
Sugar is sold at double the world price in the US.

The point is; tarrifs aren't cut and dry, and they aren't one sided.

The only reason Trump has an issue with our dairy is that his farmers produce too much milk. There is an overproduction.
@LubaMeader @NancyPelosi @realDonaldTrump Canada already makes enough.We have a system that actually protects our own farmers.

The US may offer subsidies, but if you have over production that's where the farmers lose money.
