We have different health standards that the US does not have. We do not use antibiotics or growth hormones in our milk.
Also given everything Canada imports from the US, even with the tarrifs we still import 10% of dairy products.
The US restricts our dairy imports at 3%.
The main issue when it comes to Dairy farmers in the US is there is overproduction. The US produces too much milk. We only provide a certain amount.
So we have supply management.
Now on to tariffs.
Did you know the US also has a system to try to keep other foreign goods out of the US?
Sugar is sold at double the world price in the US.
The point is; tarrifs aren't cut and dry, and they aren't one sided.
The only reason Trump has an issue with our dairy is that his farmers produce too much milk. There is an overproduction.
The US may offer subsidies, but if you have over production that's where the farmers lose money.
