Eku ewú ọmọ ooo.... The joy was obvious, the smile was wide, everyone one was congratulating her. The husband was feeling proud, the wife?.Her shoulder was high.
She had just pushed our a 4kg baby out, she is on top of the world.
#investapint #medicstoriesbydrseuno
9 month of emotional tussle, physical challenges, constantly praying against the "village people" so that the delivery will go smoothly.... It definitely went smoothly or HAD IT? #investApint #medicstoriesbydrseuno
2 hours after delivery: she felt uncomfortable, her post delivery pad was soaked, she expected bleeding after the delivery, but this is too much. It's as if she has a tap opened to the fullest down there. Soon she was feeling dizzy and tired. #investApint #medicstoriesbydrseuno
She called on the nurse, the nurse called on the doctor. The doctor examined her, saw a pad soaked with blood, took it away, big clots in the vagina wall. He knew what was going on.
"get me a cusco and 2 sims speculum" he asked of the nurses. #investApint #medicstoriesbydrseuno
"she is bleeding, I need to search for the source"
"Hang, a 500mls bag of Dextrose infusion, add 40 units of oxytocin into it, let it run at 30 drops/min" he said.
Orders were flying
Nurses were running
The patient was getting tired
Husband was outside the labour suit pacing
The new grandparents were already in full prayer mode
"n'oruko Jésù, ẹyin èmi ọrùn ooooo oooo..........."
There was tension in the air, was their joy about to turn to sadness on the same day. Tears were rolling, teeth were gnashing.. #investApint #medicstoriesbydrseuno
"tell the laboratory technician to get me a purple bottle" the doctor said to his nurse.
She was about to dash out...
"wait, and also a pink bottle, a purple and pink bottle. Now run" he said and she dashed out.
He was struggling to located the source of bleed.
#investApint
There was just too much blood, where was it all coming from. He went methodologically, examined the vagina wall, all clear, he looked in deeper.
"hello madam, are you with me?" he asked
"hmmm, hmmmm" she responded

The nurse was back
"the phlebotomist is on his way" Nurse said
"good, thank you" he acknowledged
"have you found the bleeder" she asked
"not yet, how is the fluid going" he asked
"it going through very well. Maybe she tore her cervix, the baby weighed 4kg."
"thats what I'm checking at the moment, could you do a set of Vitals on her"
"PR: 120bpm
BP: 80/40
RR: 27cpm
LOC: responds to pain.

"where is the phlebotomist for godsake" he screamed
"I'm here" someone to his right responded.
"don't just stand there, take blood samples. Infact I'll need you to do a clotting profile and also electrolytes on her"
"I figured, so I came with all the bottle samples. Just in case"
"wallahi, you are a smart man, Wasere" the doctor commended.
"Oya please take the samples, let me know what the pcv is immediately and we will definitely be needing blood.
#InvestApint
I estimate that she has lost about 1.5L of blood, if not 2L sef. Oya please ṣe kíá" the doctor stated.
"I've found the bleeder, get me needle holder, forceps and two vicryl 2/0 sutures. Let get this over with and focus on the complication of such blood loss" #investApint
He finished up, ensure she was no longer bleeding.
Her vital was still not looking good, he commenced her on fluids to try and bring the pressure up.
"her PCV is 15% doctor" the lab tech told him over the phone.
"can we get blood?" he asked
#medicstoriesbydrseuno #investApint
"we already working on getting 1 pint of blood for her" the lab technician responded
"1 pint ké?, she will need 5 pints of blood or at least 4 pints in the minimum"
"ok, we will see what we can do, there is a need for payment oo, you know we don't have a blood bank
#investApint
We have to buy it ni oo" the lab technician responded.
"ehn I'll speak to the husband, you try and get the blood. How much is blood by the way?" the doctor asked
"she is O positive, so it is about 28k. Since she needs 5pints that will be 140k"
#investApint #medicstoriesbydrseuno
"hope you are not going to quote that figure for him, that just the price to get blood from a blood bank oo. We still have to run tests on them, to ensure they are safe and compatible with her. That is 5k per pints óò" the lab tech told him
#investApint #medicstoriesbydrseuno
"so we are looking at 165k to give this woman blood to a clinically acceptable level"
"Yes sir"
"ok, I'll speak to him" Dr. said.

"Mr Brown"
"How is my wife, how is she?" the family huddled around the doctor
"at the moment she is stable"
#medicstoriesbydrseuno #investApint
"she suffered Post Partum Hemorrhage. She lost a lot of blood. We have stopped the bleeding, but she will need blood, about 5 pints of blood" he continued
#medicstoriesbydrseuno #investApint
"and unfortunately, without the blood, we run the risk of other complications"
"so how much is the blood?" her father asked
"for the 5pints of blood, that should be about 165k" he stated slowly
"haaaaaa, Gbèsè rẹ ooooo" her mother screamed
#medicstoriesbydrseuno #investApint
"I can get you the money, can you get us the blood" her father asked again
"we currently working hard at it, we haven't found any yet but I'm hopeful. I needed to update you, let you know what is happening and what we are doing about it" the doctor stated.

This is one of the so many scenarios that health workers face daily in our country. Scenario where blood transfusion is the most important management step in the recovery of a patient.
There are so many obstacles.
#medicstoriesbydrseuno #investApint
Not enough blood banks.
Uninformed citizens who have heard so many myth about blood donation.
The logistics of getting this blood to the hospital where it is needed.
And most times, the cost of providing blood to the patients might even be more than the cost of the procedure.
Then there is also the challenges face by people who are willing to donate, unwelcoming faces, hot environment, dirty environment, the smell of blood in the air.

I have always wondered why we can't have a central donating centre or a community based donating centre
#InvestApint
I didn't know I was thinking in the abroad way until I got to UK and realise that is exactly what they do.
They have donation centres in each city and even community based donations centres making use of churches, mosques, sports centre, football stadiums.
#investApint
This is where @LifeBankNigeria comes in.
@LifeBankNigeria is a blood donation centre, that aim to fill that gap for the citizens. They aim to collect these blood under aesthetically pleasing and comfortable environment.
#medicstoriesbydrseuno #investApint
They will collect blood from willing blood donors, then transport them to various public and private hospitals that require them. In other words, they also handle the logistic behind transfer.
#investApint #medicstoriesbydrseuno
They are hoping that we can #InvestApint. A pint of blood can save a life. That newly delivered mother who is bleeding. That sickle cell child groaning in pain. The young man who suffered a Road traffic accident, the elderly woman who is been treated for sepsis. #investApint
The cancer patient who needs her blood normalised before she can receive her next chemo. That dialysis patient who cannot be dialysed unless there is blood made available.

Just think about it, blood is Life.
@LifeBankNigeria wants to fill that gap.
#investApint
They want to make blood available to the citizen, but they need your help. Blood can't magically appear, someone like you and I have to donate.
Blood donation is a safe procedure.
Oh did I tell you, THEY ARE NOT SELLING THIS BLOOD
All blood collected will be given to public/private hospital FREE.
That is why they are supported by @cowrywise
For people who are wondering if they can donate. You will be checked out before blood is taken from you.

A pint is just 500mls. Should you wonder if you have enough blood. Multiply 70 by your weight (for men) and 65 by your weight (for women). That is your estimated blood volume
And we only need 3.5L as circulating volume. Just imagine the possibility.

We can help ourselves, we can contribute to the health system of our country.

Please #investApint
The event is holding on the 14th June 2018 at 634, Adeyemo Alakija, Victoria Island, Lagos.
#investApint
PS: as required of me by the General Medical Council of UK in line with the principle of the Good Medical Practice.
I state formally that I'm not a shareholder, nor a partner with @LifeBankNigeria, @cowrywise.
#medicstoriesbydrseuno #investApint
Neither have I received any financial or otherwise benefit in the promotion of this campaign. I have done this because I believe we can all contribute to the Healthcare system in our own little ways.

Just imagine, free blood donation, free blood transfusion.
