Everyone would like to climb up the food chain.
To climb the social status ladder or become richer. That is human nature.

People hang out with people who offer value, or at least - don't subtract value.
In other words - As long as you don't lower my status, we'll hang out.
High-status people don't hang with low-status people, at least not on a regular basis.
Hanging out with low-status people LOWERS their status. That is how it works.

If you look at things objectively - 1 winner friend is preferred over 100 loser friends.
In high school, I was around losers, but we weren't at the bottom so we weren't completely ignored by The Top.
The Top were the cool guys and they had women around them. Hanging out with The Top was everyone's objective.

One of the losers, Dan, got his driving license. He's rich
His parents bought him a Sports car.
Suddenly he started to receive attention from The Top.
He didn't have any practical value to offer, but he had some - He made them look cool when arriving at a party in a Sports car.

Do you think any of us were invited to the parties?
Do you think he told them "Hold on, lemme call Oliver & the rest so we can hang out together"?

He had a chance to climb the social ladder, and he seized it. I had no anger towards him. Trying to pull us would result in his banishment because we had no value to offer.
Eventually, they kicked him off, because nobody cared anymore about going to party with a sports car, and he hadn't offered anything to the group.

He offered no:
Financial opportunities
Social opportunities
Sexual opportunities
Networking opportunities
Sound advice.
