Special counsel lawyer said they didn't believe there were any conditions that could assure the court Manafort would comply with orders if he is released again, saying he engaged in a "sustained campaign." Manafort's lawyer argued there should just be a clearer "no contact" order

NEW: The federal judiciary now expects to have enough money from other sources to keep the courts largely business-as-usual during the shutdown through Jan. 18 (previously it was Jan. 11) — this is the latest from the Administrative Office of the US Courts (HT @hsu_spencer)
In order to make the funds that the judiciary does have (absent a congressional appropriation) last as long as possible, "courts have been asked to delay or defer non-mission critical expenses, such as new hires, non-case related travel, and certain contracts"
DOJ, of course, is already affected by the shutdown, so most judges have been approving requests or issuing blanket orders to delay civil litigation involving the federal govt during the shutodwn (criminal cases still have to proceed as usual)

Some fireworks in court this morning as a judge criticized the lawyer representing Concord Management & Consulting in the special counsel Russian troll farm case for his language and harsh words about Mueller's office in filings — "unprofessional, inappropriate, and ineffective"
The judge told attorney Eric Dubelier that his strategy was "ineffective" and that his approach to filings — including pop culture quotes (see: assets.documentcloud.org/documents/5676…) and accusing Mueller's office basically of lawlessness — was "undermining your credibility in this courthouse"
"Knock it off," Judge Dabney Friedrich told Dubelier. This then led to a heated exchange where Dubelier said he needed to consult his client since the judge had accused of unprofessional conduct, and now there might be bias from the judge. There's no bias, the judge replied.

What does that mean? He conspired to commit a crime against the US or to defraud the US:
A conspiracy, definitionally, requires more than one conspirator. Who did Manafort conspire with? The first paragraph dealing with Count 1 names Richard Gates and Konstantin Kilimnik "and others"

▪briefings with the office of Special Counsel
▪turning over documents related to Trump
▪testifying in other proceedings

That last will most directly impact Donald Trump Jr.

Now would be the time for a pardon.
Trump really has no concern for anyone. His oldest child is now threatened and nothing.

Trump always knew #Manafort could put Don Jr. in prison next to him and he dangled the hint of a pardon, but that's all.

Manafort's plea doesn't hurt Trump, but it sure hurts Jr.

Federal prosecutors on Friday DROPPED five of seven charges pending against Paul Manafort, President Trump’s former campaign chairman, in a step toward a plea agreement expected to be finalized within hours.

Manafort is charged with one count of conspiracy and one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice. The prosecutors dropped five other charges encompassing money laundering and violations of a lobbying disclosure law.

Today (3/27/2018), attorneys for Paul Manafort filed a motion to dismiss the charges brought by the Special Counsel in the Eastern District of VA.

Arguments by Manafort’s counsel:
(1) Rosenstein’s Order appointing the Special Counsel exceeds his authority.
(2) the superseding indictment “extends beyond the scope of jurisdiction that the [Order] purports to grant.”
The Order grants “carte blanche to investigate and prosecute ‘any matters’ that might arise” from Trump/Russia investigation.

“The Order thus permits the sort of unaccountable, ‘sprawl[ing]’ investigation the Special Counsel Regulations were designed to prevent."
