I think white folks in general have trouble understanding that this is the root of white supremacy (inherent belief in white "goodness" and a tendency to reflexively give other white people the benefit of the doubt).
Growing up, it's this that affected me more, stayed with me longer, than some asshole hurling a racial epithet at me. It was the unfairness, which was so obvious but also so completely ignored.
If I forgot my homework, I paid the penalty. And of course, that's fair, right? Those are the rules. But that only works if you look at it in a vacuum.
I also saw white kids (esp. white girls) forget their homework. Their excuses weren't just believed... they were often *offered* by the teacher. "Just have your mom (they all went to the same church after all) drop it off before lunch." SER: Hey, *my* mom could do that!
Melania Trump married an awful human being. As most marriages are based in some form of shared values, it's not irrational to presume she's also an awful human being. But everyone wants to see her as a victim.
Like if the world was just full of Mr. Rogers, I'd buy it, but it's not. Few people extend this treatment to non-rich, thin, white, former supermodels.
I've seen a lot of white liberals extend more empathy to Melania Trump's likely self-inflicted situation than to a black mother whose child got shot in the park ("Well, not to judge, but why did she let him play w. a toy gun as though that's not at all what most kids do?")
Hell, they show more empathy to Melania than to a black mother whose child fell into a gorilla enclosure: "She should've been watching him! Not that poor gorilla is dead."
There is often an almost fetishistic adoration by white liberals of successful black women (Beyonce, Michelle, Oprah). It feels as if they are not viewed as human beings but as idols. Whereas, Melania is just doing her best. Well, no.. she's doing her worst.
And Beyonce, who would've *never* worn that jacket under those circumstances, isn't *naturally* awesome. She works hard at it. If you truly support these awesome black women, do them the courtesy of shouting, "Man, Melania really sucks at this."
