Justice Kennedy's retirement opens up a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court. Any nomination to that seat must live up to the words written above the steps of the highest court in the land, "equal justice under law."
This means defending and expanding civil rights, voting rights, and workers' rights. It means protecting a woman's right to choose. And upholding protections for those with pre-existing conditions who can finally see a doctor and get the care they need.
It means a new justice who will safeguard the rights of the LGBTQ community. Finally get big money out of politics. End gerrymandering. And ensure every single person coming before that highest court is treated with respect and dignity.
In the last week alone, the Supreme Court has issued close rulings on the president's Muslim ban, on workers’ rights, on voting rights, on gerrymandering, and on a woman’s right to choose. The stakes for this nomination couldn't be higher. We have to get this right.
