Yes, Trump and his rhetoric may well have played a role.
However, what I've read in his apparent past writings and court cases points to a man who had massive mental health issues and a huge grudge against this paper.
Ramos seemed pretty unhinged in the documentation from his harassment case... and has been feeding a grudge against the paper ever since.
That just *feels* different when the person has been threatening and harassing the targets since long before Trump was even a candidate.
