Singer at Galveston’s Balinese Room, circa 1942. It was a grand seaside Tiki palace / casino run by mobsters years before Vegas became a big thing.
Balinese Room hosted all the top acts- Sinatra, Martin & Lewis, Sammy Davis, et al. Governor of Texas ordered a crackdown on Galveston gambling in 1957, and it was raided. Hobbled along after that, and fell into disrepair. Sadly wiped out by Hurricane Ike 2008.
I think my new life goal is to resurrect the Balinese Room. Thanks for a good time Galveston, Sin City of the Southwest. I will be back.
