This is my second 4th of July as an American citizen--and I gotta tell you that it feels particularly bitter.

The racism, the cruelty, the jingoism, the naked partisanship. Our country is currently presenting its worst face to the world.

BUT...

...I don't believe that this is what has defined our country, much less that it will do so in the future.

We shall overcome. Or at least it lies in our power to do so.

That is why I don't for a moment regret being an American citizen.

There are no automatisms, though. We've got to work very hard to create a country that actually lives up to America's promise.

So I'm especially happy that, in a true act of patriotism, @protctdemocracy published an important roadmap for how to protect our democracy today.

And please make it your Independence Day resolution to keep fighting for the survival of the democratic institutions that, more than race or creed, have always defined our country.
