Brexit crisis time. If this BBC story is accurate the Government's 'third way' on Brexit is dead on arrival in Brussels. The early Brussels rumours will have been right - same old fudge. More details follows for those not thoroughly bored... 1/ bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politi…
Any chance of a deal relies at minimum on UK accepting single market for goods, and customs union - even that probably isn't acceptable to the EU but it could be a starting point to talk. It requires the Gov to cross the bridge to show willing to somehow be in the EEA club 2/
In other words to drop the idea that maintaining EU regulations where we wanted and diverge where we wanted was enough to remove border inspections. The same fudge there's been since the start. The EU will rightly never accept this approach 3/
It's also extremely unlikely the EU will accept a third country like the UK administering their tariffs and being their external border in the way described just so we can have our own trade deals. And certainly not without many more years of trust building than implied 4/
With the caveat that this is still just speculation - and it remains the case that there are two different stories spreading, one in which we indicate firmly SM goods and CU, one in which we fudge it. The first at a push might be a basis for talks, the 2nd will not be 5/ ends
PS1 Keep reminding ourselves of the real choices below...
PS2 Government choice. Is it more important to have a sensible negotiating position or no resignations? You can choose only one of these...
