Time for some #Brexit news of what actually IS happening as opposed to what isn’t. EMA, the European Medicines Agency,is up first. It plans to relocate its staff to a temporary building in Amstgerdam by 30 of March (thread) ema.europa.eu/documents/othe…

As the UK will become a third country, it (MHRA/VMD) can no longer become (co-)rapporteur on regulatory procedures. EMA has published cut-off dates in this regard ema.europa.eu/documents/othe…
The disintangling of the UK authorities and EMA is a big loss for both sides. The UK portfolio had to be redistributed amongst the drug authorities of other Member States. That was done at the end of April.
The German Parliament received more details in a response to a “Kleine Anfrage” - some of the portfolio went to the Bundsinstitut für Arzneimittelprodukte and the Paul-Ehrlich Institut. Nevertheless: the tone of the German document is one of regret.

This has impressively strange statements from all three speakers. So some simple facts (thread)
1) No unilateral extension of Art. 50. Extension requires all Member States and the UK to agree. That’s Art. 50(3) of the TEU
2) The other two speakers speculated about what it would take for other member states to agree. Yes, a game changer. But that’s certainly not a new government with a new negotiation plan from scratch. “We don’t like it, let’s start over” is not a likely option.

Let’s start easy: the introduction suggests that the backstop can be replaced by a full FTA. Easy. Tusk is willing to do it. This is wrong. 1) we cannot negotiate a full future relationship in 3 months 2) remember the sequencing we agreed to?

I had an aha moment at a recent conference, where a very experienced politician said that the current deadlock could only be resolved by a referendum or a general election.
What I found surprising was the mention of a general election. When the audience pointed out that both major parties have the same problem that they are split by Brexit, he conceded rapidly that a GE does not hold out the prospect of help.

The Chequers White Paper proposed that the UK would seek participation in the European Medicines Agency (EMA) “as an active participant, albeit without voting rights, which would involve making an appropriate financial contribution”
So the Government thinks that the best result that can be obtained after Brexit is to remain subject to, and to carry on paying for, EU regulation in this area even while no longer having any say in that regulation.

1. One of the biggest problems in the #Brexit debate is the total lack of media literacy where the ignorance of the public is exploited and important issues turned into click-bait trivia. This is why so many important issues are written off as "project fear".
2. One such example is the "Brexit threat to sandwiches" headlines - which of itself seems risible but sandwiches are an £8bn industry which is worth a magnitude more than fishing and and employs tens of thousands of people.
3. Sandwiches do not pass through a membrane from an alternate dimension. they depend on complex logistics and food safety systems all of which are interwoven with our customs controls and thy depend on JIT supply chains and an array of suppliers for seasonal ingredients.

5th July 2018 will be the 70th birthday of our beloved #NHS.

This THREAD argues that it is in severe danger under this #Toryshambles government, with #Brexit posing an imminent & particularly invidious threat.

To #SaveOurNHS we must work tirelessly together to #StopBrexit.
1/ Today's devolved #NHS is a complex federation of tens of 000s of orgs employing some 1.7m workers. It's combined annual budget is just shy of £150bn. It handles, overwhelmingly successfully, almost a million patients daily.

With each box maybe 000s of orgs, & England only:
2/ Unresolved public health issues & a fast-expanding multi-morbid elderly population, coupled with chronic underfunding & the blowback from the butchery of social care since 2010 means the #NHS is pressured as never before.

The UK has no structures or agency of its own for approving and licensing medicines. It relies almost exclusively on the European Medicines Agency. The MHRA is an ancillary organisation. In precisely 15 months UK access to the EMA ends; abruptly if the "no deal" voices prevail.
Where are the UK's preparations for replacing this vital framework? The answer is: Non-existent. Not even embryonic. Just a statement by Hunt this summer that the UK "will look to continue to work closely” with the EMA, but we're ready "to establish our own system if necessary".
