Morning roundup of some trade and Brexit stories, first we have Business Secretary Greg Clark in Politico talking of the real alarm that business is expressing at current events in the UK... politico.eu/article/greg-c…
Putting aside for a moment that the deal he supports only technically provides another 21 months reassurance, this tallies with what I hear from numerous businesses, who are warning of long-lasting damage to their investments in the UK
Business is not reassured by Ministers treating trade agreements like something you pick up in a sweetshop - as in this Jeremy Hunt story. As UK business know, but apparently Government doesn't, joining TPP will mean barriers to EU trade asia.nikkei.com/Editor-s-Picks…
Then on the propaganda side we have the usual misleading nonsense from Shanker Singham and friends - if WTO terms are so good why do all countries want to sign Free Trade Agreements? ft.com/content/9f2145…
Oddly Shanker is described here as former WTO Head of Market Access, which has never been mentioned before. The letter is also splendidly contradictory - so much enforceable law, which the US is currently trying to break
Let's conclude by going back to current economic reality. The global economy, for good or bad, is currently dominated by global players. They want to know we can trade with our neighbours easily, as they mostly organise regionally. What's the UK answer?
