All the recent summer reading lists I have seen are largely non-fiction or intellectual fiction

In a pre-emptive round, a VC pays up for the next round of funding before the company has hit a new milestone or new data exists to de-risk the company.
3/ A prime example of this is Bird, which is rumored to be raising a $2B valuation round just a few weeks after raising at $1B w Sequoia. Nothing material has changed, so an investor either thinks the company is mispriced or has FOMO. If Bird ends up worth $20B its a smart move

0/ There are only 3 things that kill pre-product market fit companies. These are self-evident, but founders tend to forget them. To not die you need to:
1. Find product market fit.
2. Resolve co-founder conflicts.
3. Don't run out of money.

Everything else is noise.
1a/ Find product/market fit. This is obvious but many founders spend time on unnecessary areas (constant speaking events, over-hiring the team, constant fundraising, chasing fake signals from their customer etc.).
1b/ Fake customer signals include:
Customers who won't actually pay for your product. Saying "this is really interesting" is different from cutting a check. Don't get fooled or self-delude.

1. "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House" by Michael Wolff. Yes, I hate-read this book in a matter of days. Problematically, Bannon comes across as an articulate, insightful source and not an arch nationalist parasite. Will Wolff's depiction be hagiography in the future?
2. "The Invention of the White Race, Volume 1: Racial Oppression and Social Control" and "The Invention of the White Race, Volume 2: The Origin of Racial Oppression in Anglo-America" by Theodore Allen. Who knew how important Bacon's Rebellion (1676) was to the history of racism?

And before I kick off, I want to point out that when I mention the bad stuff it is not meant as a complaint. We know the score, and knew it from the outset, I just wanted to share the reality with you as I think you'll find it interesting.
For the past couple of years I have been acquiring and helping to publish fiction and non-fiction for Eye & Lightning Books, sister imprints that have a 20-year history between them.

And lasting that long as a tiny indie is a remarkable feat.
