1. This has been happening in slow motion but it’s worth reviewing how 3000 children were separated from their families and why nearly all of them remain separated

It’s an absolute atrocity.

2. Some months ago, Trump adopted a “zero tolerance policy” advocated by hardliners. We started incarcerating people indefinitely for misdemeanors, even if they had kids.

3. When word first got out, Trump blamed a “law” passed by “Democrats.”

This was a lie.

4. Then Secretary Nielsen claimed that there was actually no family separation policy

This was also a lie.

As criticism mounted Trump signed an executive order that he claimed “ended” family separation

This was also a lie.

The order replaced family separation with indefinite family detention, which is illegal

The executive order also did nothing to reunite the thousands of kids who were already separated from their families.

Congress promised to act to fix the problem.

Paul Ryan promised a vote on a “fix” on June 21.

No vote was ever held

Meanwhile, the ACLU sued and a judge ordered the kids to be reunited with their families.

The deadline for the kids under five was today. For the other kids, it’s later this month.

So far the Trump administration has been able to reunite no more than a couple of dozen kids

Through the lawsuit, we learned the Trump administration lost track of some of the parents. Others were deported without their kids.

In the meantime, another court confirmed that indefinite family detention is illegal.

So where does that leave us?

The administration is unwilling or unable to reunite the kids who have already been separated from their parents.

They have no workable solution moving forward. They are insisting on “zero tolerance” and have no way to do it w/o separating families

Trump has continued his hardline rhetoric

Congress is doing nothing and hasn’t even held a hearing.

The tragedy continues. It gets worse every day.
