I wrote this piece for #IndigenousX today. After a quick online research for wild black women and rebel girls, I could have written at least one book. It was difficult picking just a few #BecauseOfHerWeCan stories. indigenousx.com.au/karen-wyld-wil…
I started this article with Tarenorerer (Tasmania, 1800 - 1831). Julie Dowling captured the spirit of this daring young woman in the portrait Walyer > nga.gov.au/Exhibition/nIA…
Badimia woman and highly acclaimed artist, Julie Dowling's portraits often feature strong black women - mothers, aunties, nanas, sistas. see some of her work here > yamajiart.com/artists/julie-…
And listen to an interview about her Picture the Women exhibition > abccommercial.com/contentsales/p…
Tarenorerer is a unsung hero of the frontier wars. While held in captivity and abused by sealers as a teenager - she watched and waited. Escaping, she taught other Aboriginal people how to use firearms and guerrilla warfare tactics. trove.nla.gov.au/people/752087?…
Hearing of how Tarenorerer would stand on hills spear in hand, taunting white men to come and fight her, G A Robinson ('Protector' of Aborigines, TAS) called her the Amazon of Van Diemen's Land. After being abused by sealers, Tarenorerer was wild and taking no shit from any man.
Despite her fearlessness, Tarenorerer spent about half of her life in forced servitude to white people. Sadly, she died far too young (31) and did not get to lead more revolts against the invaders. But her deeds should not be forgotten. #BecauseOfHerWeCan
