Trump forced an emergency meeting with NATO partners yesterday, reportedly threatened to pull the US out of the alliance if they didn’t meet and increase commitments to 2% of GDP spending on defense. He claimed that leaders agreed, they say that’s a lie.

Trump talks about NATO transactionally, as if members are paying a 2% of GDP in dues. He doesn’t understand how NATO works. The 2% is a commitment to military spending by these nations, not into any sort of fund, so that they are prepared to defend other member nations..
..In reality, NATO was constructed by America to increase it’s own influence in the world, and decrease the roll of the militaries of Europe, which had torn apart the world in 2 great wars in the early 20th century. America is SUPPOSED to outspend them to keep the peace.
