Now I'm going to talk a little bit about how to get into wildlife conservation. It's great to see so many people interested in nature! Conservation can be a hard career to get started but there are ways to do it. Academia is one route, but there are lots of jobs at NGOs too
A good start is by reading this interesting journal article which looked at who advertises for conservation jobs and what skills are most asked for onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.111… Here's a good write-up of the findings on @mongabay news.mongabay.com/2018/06/not-al…
If you're interested in conservation science, having a BSc & MSc is a good start. Lots of conservation jobs aren't about science though. We need fundraisers, marketers, communications experts, HR managers etc. so don't worry if you don't want to go down the academic route
I recently come from 2 years at @wwf_uk where I was in the Science & Policy team, where most of us had PhDs. But having policy experience is also really useful in conservation. I was thrown in at the deep end having to present evidence at House of Commons on the UK ivory trade!
Network as much as you can because, sadly, life is still all about who you know. Gain skills in communication, project management & managing budgets. Speak to conservationists to learn how they got employed. Don't give up!
Something I learnt possibly too late in life is the importance of having a mentor - someone further along in their career who looks out for you & who you can go to for advice or to promote/sponsor you, but NOT your manager/supervisor. Basically, someone who's got your back!
