I didn't think it was possible for the UK to be in more of a bind than it already was. I was wrong it seems. #brexit
Dear people of the UK. It seems prudent to consider starting to stockpile food and medicine. Your country is in turmoil and there's no end in sight.
I really can't see many paths back for the UK to unfuck itself. It's like the ultimate example of collective self destruction.
Seriously though. How does this get fixed? I can't see a way.
This is like some sort of joke being played out right? UK politicians have also decided to go on hols early. Because there's nothing serious at all looming in the near future.

The Brexit vote was against our London-centric system. So if there's an economic hit because of a Brexit London voted against, Westminster would make sure the London Banking sector survived but everywhere else...
Many of the problems that pushed people to vote Brexit had nothing to do with the EU. One of those problems was the government choosing to protect the banks who caused the crash with bailouts while ordinary people just got austerity.
The rich took irresponsible risks with the country's future, but they were protected either by moving their money away or by the government and it was those with least who suffered the most.

People keep saying we should have a vote on the #Brexit "final deal".

I don't think we should wait. Why not?

Two reasons-

1/ We already know there is NO version of #Brexit that wouldn't do us all (apart from the very rich) real damage. If we #RemainInTheEU, we can get on with
repairing the damage that #Brexit has already done, which is considerable, and carry on with improving things for all Europeans.

2/ I suspect May's plan is to run us out of time, so we crash out with no deal, and hence no time to vote on it. All her delaying tactics have been
aimed at that result, including trying to extend MP's extremely long holidays, to prevent them from stopping her crazy game.

I think we can't get Parliament recalled, as the usual way to do that would need the Government to ask the Speaker, and May won't allow that.

1. The biggest problem with the #Brexit is a failure to separate the issues from the personalities. The issues are more complex than the average pundit is capable of absorbing - especially when they inhabit the Westminster bubble. (thread)
2. What we find is that the level of EU understanding is pitiful even among the think tanks who are supposed to be on top of these matters. Worse still are the populist pudnits who bang the drum for Brexit but make zero effort to understand the process.
3. The Leave Alliance would be a lot more popular if we simply simply churned out pleasing populist messages but if we want to get the best from Brexit then we have to look at the situation as it is rather than how we would wish it to be.

1. Before #EURef I knew little about EU. Decades of negative UK media had made me a bit sceptical. But I was not really “political”.
2. Got a Polish partner. Been together 18 years. Long before #EURef she’d started getting snarky comments from folks about being “over here” & “going home” etc. This got steadily worse & was kinda shocking.

First, the problem, real quick.

EU needs 'backstop' that works in all eventualities, including a breakdown in future relationship talks at the end of transition.

With no border in Ireland, there "must" logically be checks between NI and GB to protect single market. /2
The problem is that puts a *customs* border in the Irish Sea, and the UK government cannot live with that, since it splits up UK.

Theresa May was very hard over on this point in her speech in Belfast. Barnier's Task Force 50 blanched last week when they saw how hard over. /3
