Typically inward-looking assessment. It takes a lot of work to sort out an EEA arrangement & even then would result in severe economic shock as we'd be out the customs union. conservativehome.com/thetorydiary/2…
Plus you need Norwegian etc approval. Plus why the fuck would Europe sign up to this? Two years wasted already. Then a further wasted year to sort temporary EEA with emergency FoM break. Then another four to organise 'Canada +++'.
And for what? To help us because we've pissed ourselves and need daddy Brussels to help us clean it up?
This is what happens when you approach a negotiation with no interest in, or awareness of, your partner's priorities. A strategic failure caused by a lack of empathy.

Quick reminder that most Tory MPs - not some, most - are deeply misinformed.
Their constituents have tried. They have been sent material constantly over the last two and a half years and regularly emailed, all of it to inform them about basic facts over Brexit. They've ignored them and read the Telegraph.
Echo chamber culture is not just about social media. It is in parliament too.

I really do try with the echo chamber thing, but nearly every day I have to unfollow someone on the other side just because of the rampant conspiracy theory tosh.
There are still lots of Leave voters in my stream, but all of them have either changed their mind, or become so disillusioned by Brexit that they're just mostly in pain or resignation.
Anyone still actively and enthusiastically supporting it has had to go through so many emotional and intellectual contortions that they've start to look quite insane.

1/ Another customs thread. This time on #customs formalities and #Backstop . Backstop envisages a #customsunion with simplifications. It mentions that a movement certificate, A.UK, will be required. No mention of customs declarations.
2/ Movement certificate demonstrates that goods are eligible for trade under a customs union. Is certified by e.g. a Chamber of Commerce. Declarations do more than that. They are entered into the national customs system and enable customs authorities to collect customs data.
3/ Much more info on a declaration than on a movement cert. Some of the most important fields include commodity code, value of goods, country of origin and customs procedure. Would imagine the UK would still like to collect this data for various reasons even under backstop.

This is a simplified view - additional formalities are required depending on the type of goods (e.g. agricultural, excise) and other supporting documentation may be needed (e.g. licenses, certificates, value declaration, insurance docs, tariff quota docs etc). /3

(1/7) If #EEA & #EFTA were the ‘worst of both worlds’ they’re often portrayed as, why would 4 successful countries stay in them, despite the opportunity to leave or join the EU? Some quick myth busting:
(2/7) 1. EFTA countries take only 20-30% of EU legislation, excluding most contentious areas like Common Agricultural Policy, and Justice & Home Affairs 2. EU legislation that EFTA does take on primarily concerns standardisation necessary for a single market.
(3/7) The vast majority of this legislation is written by expert bodies, not MEPs, which EFTA countries have just as much input into as EU countries. Similar to what would happen in a trade deal 3. EFTA countries pay less to the EU, and have more control of it.
