Doctor Who "fans" complaining that the show is adding too much "diversity for the sake of diversity" absolutely perplex me. The Doctor is the sworn protector of all humans, not just middle-aged white guys who never grew out of their nerd-boy phase.
I'm seeing "fans" actively rooting for cancellation, hoping the show will fail just because they feel casting choices are pushing a "SJW agenda." Have you been watching the reboot at all? AT ALL?
Now, I'm not saying the show is this shinging bastion of unproblematic diversity, but it consistently surprises me not just with the number of supporting roles given to people of color, not-straight people, and disabled people.
The 9th Doctor's companions included Mickey, a black man, and Captain Jack Harkness, an openly pansexual man played by an openly gay man. Martha, a companion of the 10th Doctor, is a black woman. There are interracial couples seen frequently. A lesbian married couple.
(Wait, I take back the "disabled actors" thing because after I typed it I realized I made a goof, as the character I was thinking about is Deaf and Deaf/HoH people have different opinions on the "disabled" label, so my bad and I'll retract that and not make that mistake again).
Last season we had a black lesbian companion who got what I felt was a really cool character arc AND a happily ever after (some disagree with whether it's an HEA, but I'm a romantic so becoming one with the universe with someone you love, to me, seems like a great deal).
This has been going on for the entire reboot, but only just NOW is it some kind of political agenda? Why? Because The Doctor is a woman? Because there isn't a hot white girl in a short skirt for you to look at? Because someone who isn't just like you isn't the focus?
