Once upon a time...

I read an article in Psychology Today titled, "4 Ways Emotions Can Screw Up Your Decisions."

As the name implies, the post discussed our feels and how they can sabotage our intellect.
But I'm a glass-half-full kind of guy...

So instead of harping on the dangers of emotions, let's spin the story and talk about how you can take advantage of these psychological weaknesses (ethically of course)!
EXPLOIT #1: "Excitement can cause you to overestimate your chances of success."

Oh boy is this true...

Think about the rush of excitement a gambler gets after winning a few hands of Hold 'Em.

Soon they're saying they're on a "hot streak" and claiming they "can't lose."
But the same thing happens to spectators.

When we get excited watching Sylvester Stallone or Gal Gadot kick arse in blockbuster movies, we start imagining that we could do the same.

Suddenly, we each think we're the next Rocky Balboa or Wonder Woman.
The point is, people get excited by watching rare feats of accomplishment.

They show us what's possible and convince us that we can do them too.

And that's why it's so effective to sell with extraordinary stories and life-changing testimonials.
EXPLOIT #2: "Anxiety in one area of your life spills over into other areas."

Your audience will often displace their feelings.

One bad experience will make everything seem bad. And one great victory will make life look rosy.
Use this phenomenon to magnify the pain caused by a specific problem and amplify the benefits of solving it.

For example, if you're in the fitness niche, remind your audience that obesity not only destroys their health...
But it also alienates them, erodes their self-esteem, and causes additional stress at work.

Their problem has a ripple effect of negativity.

And by solving it (with the solution you present), then the waves will reverse and turn into a positive cascade through their lives.
EXPLOIT #3: "Feelings of sadness can cause you to settle."

If someone's in deep pain, then they'll pay a high price -- without hesitation -- to the person who can relieve it.

That's why it's critical to agitate the problem.
Bring an existing issue to the forefront of a prospect's mind and force them to see how it's impacting their life.

Then, contrast those emotions with the elation they'd feel and the tangible benefits they'd get if all those problems were gone.
When you do it right, your lead won't "shop around," for a solution.

They'll settle on YOU (and they won't even feel like they're settling).
EXPLOIT #4: "Anger and embarrassment can lead to taking a long shot."

Similar to #1, negative emotions can cause overconfidence just like positive ones.

When we're angry, there's no time for patience.

We want to feel better NOW.
The person who's spurned by a cheating lover will do anything to get vengeance and reclaim their confidence:

> buy self-help books
> a gym membership
> or a shiny red sports car

...There's oodles to be made by helping folks when they feel powerless, insecure, or slighted.
Show them a chance at reversing their fortunes and they'll be willing to take it -- not matter how low the odds.

So there you have it folks...

4 ways you can ethically hijack emotions in your favor -- and make a kit and caboodle in the process.
