Research on far-right extremism shows that if citizens believe there's an immigration "crisis" the potential to incite individuals an hatred towards violence increases.
These numbers confirm we shouldn't be surprised by what may be a spike in hate crimes in Ontario. #cdnnatsec

In 2010, Canada did $1 billion in exports to Saudi Arabia. To put it in persepective, right now we do ~$300 billion with the US. A break down in relations is never great but this ain’t exactly going to kill us. #cdnfp
Where this might hurt is the ~25k students from Saudi that study in Canada. But these students are going to have a hard time getting US visas under Trump.
Also potential for trouble of Saudi Arabia "convinces" its "allies" to follow suit. But Canada has such a small footprint in the Middle East that I have to think, again, while this isn't great, it's not the total end of the world.

This "final interim rule" skips usual due process and goes into effect NOW, because #MigrantCaravan
3/ N.B.: This doesn't complete cut off all possibility of legal protection for #asylum seekers. "Withholding of removal" (a form of relief I like to call "asylum lite") and protection under the Convention Against Torture remain. That's not to say that this is necessarily OK.

As far-right extremism spikes, the Trump administration is poised to end DHS's Countering Violent Extremism grants program & has already crippled the interagency task force on Countering Violent Extremism.

omfg. The House of Representatives has introduced a bill called the “Unmasking Antifa Act of 2018,” which carries a potential 15-year prison sentence for anyone caught engaging in behaviors typically associated with anti-fascist activists.
As the US House seeks to criminalize anti-fascist activism, it's worth noting that anti-fascist activists in Russia are currently being tortured and detained by the FSB under "anti-terrorism" laws.

In a thought-provoking op-ed @nytimes, @davidrkadler argues that centrists, not extremists, are most hostile to democracy: nytimes.com/interactive/20…. Although the analyses on which the op-ed is based are interesting, I do not think that they warrant Adler’s main claim. #Thread
1. Employing WVS & EVS data, Adler recodes left/right self-placement (10points scale) into 5 categories: far left, center left, center, center right and far right. He shows that those who position themselves in the center are more hostile to democracy.
2. I tried to replicate his analysis regarding “satisfaction with democracy” with the most recent wave of the ESS and I get very similar results.
