Hate to make comparisons to the 1930s, but an aggressive interpretation that immigrants not be a "public charge" is exactly how the US govt blocked Jewish refugees from entering the US before WWII. Stephen Miller wants to do it again. 1/ nbcnews.com/politics/immig…
We know that programs like WIC and SNAP have positive long-term health and educational outcomes for the kids that have access to them. But the Trump administration now wants to force immigrant families to choose between those benefits and a green card 2/ nbcnews.com/politics/immig…
Immigrants who use govt-sponsored health insurance - the standard in the developed world - would be barred from becoming citizens. 3/
The same administration - esp Miller - rejects the actual evidence that on balance, immigrants are a boon to the US economy and even our public welfare systems, supporting our parent's social security system 4/ nytimes.com/2017/09/18/us/…
Immigrants are generally used to arbitrary Kafkaesque bureaucracies, but there is also something dreadfully unfair about changing the rules of the game, so that people who used food stamps 10 years ago are being told now that eliminates any chance they have for citizenship. 5/
Immigrants built America, but every so often the country veers into a dangerous era of nativism. We are there now. Worth remembering that those pushing these extreme measures would have denied their own families entry. Is that who we are? 6/ jewishjournal.com/opinion/rob_es…
