Am unashamedly pushing this essay again, as, y'know, I think it covers some important ground. But also want to draw out one bit that could be it's own blog post (and probably soon will be) businessgreen.com/bg/blog-post/3…
It's this bit
The combination of extreme weather, advances in climate attribution, rising food prices, and rising emissions make this the most obvious 'teachable moment' in years. So where are our political leaders?
They all agree climate change is a serious long term threat. They all agree clean growth is of critical importance to post-Brexit Britain. Yet you look around for any even vaguely interesting comments on climate in recent weeks and...
Can you imagine a Minister, or better the Prime Minister, ever emulating the French Environment Minister and saying something as honest as this?
Of course not. And yet, why not?
A leader who really believed in their own government's position on climate action would seize this opportunity. They would declare 'this is one of the most important speeches I will ever give'. They would level with the public about food prices and infrastructure vulnerabilities.
They would announce a raft of new policies to try and convey some confidence that they have got this, that they can act in the national interest and tackle what they agree is a grievous threat.
Building standards, energy efficiency, R&D, onshore renewables, etc, etc, they'd fast track the lot of it and challenge their critics to come up with a better plan without resorting to something they read in the Spectator about there not being a problem.
May won't do this. Even now she won't poke with a big green stick the people who are gunning for her.
And, even stranger, Corbyn isn't doing it either. You like rallies? Have a climate rally. Make it the biggest yet. Draw a line that will further strengthen your advantage amongst the under 40s.
Instead nothing happens. And we wait until the autumn when climate will lucky to be more than a paragraph in the leaders' speeches. But don't worry, because we can fill the summer months arguing about Burqa jokes that would shame a racially insensitive 13 year old instead.
Again, this.
Anyways, this is very rude about our political leadership, but you've got to hope that privately they are as worried as anyone else who understands these risks and at some point the political calculations that lead to soft-pedalling are recalibrated. businessgreen.com/bg/blog-post/3…
