1/ Each week, we track hate in America.

This week’s roundup focuses on the anniversary of Unite the Right.

Here’s what we’ve learned since last year’s deadly rally:

2/ This weekend marks the one-year anniversary of hundreds of white supremacists descending on Charlottesville and the city erupting into a spasm of deadly violence.

The event’s organizers are commemorating the occasion with a new rally, but conditions have changed.
3/ Charlottesville successfully blocked Unite The Right’s effort to return to the city. And lead organizer Jason Kessler has spent much of the past year alienating many of his former allies in the white nationalist movement.

4/ There’s another event planned for Washington D.C., but when we asked the 10 main speakers from last year if they were coming back, four told us no (and the other six didn’t respond).
5/ The turnout from the rank-and-file is also in doubt. As @ADL_National extremism expert @egavactip told us:
@ADL_National @egavactip 6/ The threat of violence is still very real. Recent clashes between the far right and anti-racist counter protesters have been bloody.

@ADL_National @egavactip 7/ To remember what it was like a year ago, listen to our Charlottesville show:

And our show a few weeks later from the Berkeley riots that engulfed @Al_Letson.

@ADL_National @egavactip @Al_Letson 8/ Whereas other white nationalist groups, like the neo-Nazi site the Daily Stormer, have recently seen a major uptick in bitcoin donations to their account, as tracked by @NeonaziWallets, Kessler hasn’t received a similar bump prior to this weekend.
@ADL_National @egavactip @Al_Letson @NeonaziWallets 9/ Also this week: Microsoft warned the far right social network Gab that it could get the boot from the tech giant’s web hosting service if it didn’t clean up some of its content.
10/ Microsoft initially told Gab that the problem was phishing links in two posts from the white nationalist former CA senate candidate Patrick Little. But the posts didn’t contain any links.
11/ When we asked Microsoft, they sent us a statement saying the problem was all the racism:
12/ As of now, Gab’s site appears to still be up. And, even if Microsoft does give it the boot, Gab could likely find another host for its platform and back back online pretty quickly
13/ Also, check out this documentary from filmmaker @DavidFSutcliffe about how fear-mongering in conservative media inspired a failed terrorist attack on a predominantly Muslim community in New York
