Medicine in Japan is overwhelmingly staffed by Japanese partly because of this. They don't have to import foreigners to cover female docs working part time. Singapore had explicit quotas in favor of men for same reason, they didn't want to subsidize edu of
a demographic they knew would likely work part time in greater numbers. NHS by contrast keeps recruiting foreigners to cover shortages

What most people call "welfare" is actually TANF, and the emphasis on that one is on the word TEMPORARY. As in you can't "live off of it" like people like Kirk claim. The "welfare" that many of them think of ended back in 1996, when I was a freshman in high school.

I went grocery shopping at @LoblawsON today, and I overheard two cashiers talking. Normally it annoys me when people complain about the job in front of customers, but one of them said something that made my heart sink.

"They don't even pay us enough to afford lunch."
I pretended not to hear, and put my groceries on the conveyor belt. One of the cashiers mentions that she was asked to work overtime, and that the manager was annoyed when she said no.

"Are they paying me overtime? Giving me benefits? And I'm supposed to stay *longer*?"
At this point I can't pretend any more. I asked the cashier in my lane how many hours she's clocked this week. Less than 40, she says, but their management purposely shifts around schedules to keep as many employees working part-time as possible.

Long hours, but few shifts.

1/ On #IWD2018 we would like to highlight the potential gender bias on the #citizensrights agreement for EU citizens in the UK from December
2/ The December #citizensrights agreement defines those who qualify for Settled Status quite narrowly and mainly favours those who study or work full time.
3/ those not covered will be carers, stay at home parents and potentially those who work part time and earn below the minimum earning threshold. In short mainly (but not only) women.
