My dream Today Programme...

- relax format scaffold, eg 0810 not *always* combative i/v, 0820 not always ‘fun’, 0840 not always ‘debate’
- drop religion

That’d get me listening again #r4today
... also:
- no thought for day. It’s a news, not beliefs, programme
- reduce blocks of sport and business. If there’s important stuff, it bubbles up into main prog anyway.
- have some longer-form packages with expert reporters providing more insight and depth on a story
...and most of all build an investigate reporting team. The Today programme has long given up on leading the news agenda, beyond a clip from the 0810 interviewee about a story from yesterday’s papers or today’s official line from government. Needs to get its mojo back.

For those who followed my thread on the IOD spinning survey results about Brexit to support May’s deal... it turns out they sent that press release out TWO WEEKS before the survey had even finished!! It closes Nov 30th!!
...sure enough, I dig back into my emails to find the survey invitation I was sent, and it confirms the closing date is 30th Nov...

Today's #TenThings post will be about FIRST PAGES. What to do, what not to do. As always, YMMV, my way is not the only way, and of course outliers can get away with crazy stuff. My experience comes from reading 100s if not 1000s of first pages in my classes, workshops, etc. So!
There are several things that are seen as RED FLAGS when an agent or editor is reading your 1st pages. I'm going to go through several of them and explain why they don't work. Your goal: Open in a scene that shows CHARACTER through DIALOG and ACTION, plus seamless WORLDBUILDING.
1. Opening w/ an insane fight scene or strange weirdness, then having your character wake up-- it was all a dream! You know we need ACTION! in 1st pages, but this old trick rarely works. Action means SOMETHING HAPPENS, not necessarily a crazy battle. Ground us, don't confuse us!

Today mom and I talked about the way my father died a few years ago. I’ve always felt like I should get really real about it because it might help somebody not make the same choices, but it’s really depressing. Marsha Cooke’s plea for people to quit smoking made today the day.
There’s two main ways smoking is going to kill you; cancer or lung disease — aka Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease aka COPD. The latter is what got my dad, as it did Leonard Nimoy and millions of other Americans. If you smoke enough, statistically you will get one of them.
My father smokes for decades and quit smoking more than than ten years before it killed him. He felt fine for years. He even felt good. But as we age our lungs naturally degrade. That’s why many older people have shortness of breath. Smoking accelerates the degradation hugely.

#Today's story to #EndFamilySeparation Four months ago, Dad and 4-month-old entered at the Texas/Mexico border and requested #asylum. Dad and child were immediately separated and the baby put in ORR custody. #FamiliesBelongTogether
Dad was detained in a #Texas detention center where @RAICESTEXAS consulted. Dad accepted a deportation to be quickly reunited w/ his infant child. However, the Dad was deported & NOT his child. The now 8-month-old baby has been in ORR custody for 4 months. #EndFamilySeparation
The Mom and Dad now have once weekly Skype calls with their 8-month-old baby. That's right, folks. They Skype with an infant. #EndFamilySeparation #FamiliesBelongTogether

Ce reportage va être épuisant pour la communauté #vélotaf, déjà parce que tout ça on le sait, et parce qu'une partie non négligeable des automobilistes vont passer à côté de ce qui est important. Je m'adresse donc à eux.
En préambule, je vais préciser d'où je parle. Je vélotaffe depuis une petite dizaine d'années maintenant, à Paris et dans sa banlieue (voire grande). Je suis expérimenté et bien équipé. Une partie de ma manière de rouler découle aussi de mon militantisme : le vélo c'est l'avenir.
Il m'arrive de louer des véhicules à moteur de temps à autres, de prendre un taxi à l'occasion. Je sais ce que c'est de conduire sur une route de campagne, dans un embouteillage, de chercher son chemin dans une ville inconnue, bref. Je suis trimestriellement des vôtres.

Pour faire du vélo, il vous faut évidemment un vélo.
Mais si vous choisissez le vélo pour tous vos trajets quotidiens, il faudra également investir quelques dizaines d'euros dans un peu d'équipement. Après un an de #Vélotaf, voici ce que je vous conseille :
1. Un support de caméra, qui se fixe sur le casque ou le guidon. Et la caméra qui va avec, évidemment. Comptez de 50 € à 500 € accessoires inclus. Intérêt : filmer les joies mais aussi les trucs pénibles. Et avoir une preuve et des infos en cas d'accident ou de mise en danger.
2. Un kit pour réparer en cas de crevaison (jamais ouvert pour ma part, après 3000 km sur les routes d'Ile-de-France. Inch'Allah ça va continuer). Rustines, colle, 3 démonte-pneu. Quelques euros.
