This is a sobering read and is well worth remembering the next time the 'let's just adapt to climate change' crowd get their slot in @spectator theguardian.com/cities/2018/au…
Just as it is worth remembering the next time someone insists there is no clear link between climate change and migration and security risks.
At 50C human beings start to cook. There are already cities hitting 50c and there is a very real chance that will become more frequent.
The idea we can adapt to frequent temperatures like that, and even if we could it would prove cheaper than mitigation, is just laughable. As is the idea this would not trigger migration.
And, of course, we are going to have to try to do both. We've got plenty more 40C and 50C heatwaves already baked into the system, so we need to put in place what resilience (and potentially managed migration) we can.
But we are also going to have to decarbonise to net zero emissions ASAP, because pretty basic physics dictates that unless we do those temperatures will edge up to 55C or 60C. Perhaps not this century, but at some point.
Again, this is worth reading (just as it is worth considering the implications for food supply chains which the feature does not address) because we still tend to under-sell what climate impacts will actually mean theguardian.com/cities/2018/au…
