Atenean families or La Sallian clans won’t give up their tradition of sending kids to Ateneo or La Salle. Also true with alumni of other Catholic and other private schools. They’d continue their family traditions.

CEAP should stop fearmongering against free education in SUCs.
Catholic schools’ alumni continue to pour money and other donations to their alma mater. Complete with naming rights.

This is on top of the escalating tuition and other school fees they collect from parents and students.
The state has been generous to private schools: State scholarships (GATSPE, for example) for students seeking to study in private colleges and unis; and SHS vouchers have helped expand of private high schools.

Most importantly: Tuition fee increases are deregulated.
Free tuition in SUCs is important to the typical Filipino SHS graduate whose family resources aren’t enough to pay for expensive college studies.
Perhaps 5 or 10 years from now, free tuition would be a new normal in all levels of public schools. Just like what happened in public elementary and high schools.

Private schools didn’t die then. Many even prospered.
Perhaps the next step to free tuition is the de-corporatization of SUCs. Corporatization or commercialization runs counter to the public service nature of SUCs. The policy could circumvent the free tuition law and restore the tuition regime where SUCs compete with private ones.
As long as HEMA considers and mandates SUC boards of regents as business-like board of directors, and SUC presidents as CEOs — there will be conflicts between public service and the profit motive.
Hoping CEAP won’t make the Philippines go back to the recent past of SUCs competing with private schools in gouging parents in their race to raise tuition fees. Keep public education free — and not hostaged by the private sector and its profit-oriented mindset.
