When I worked in an agency, it was usual to hear folks to say they’re sick and tired of the daily grind. And that they look for something new to do, something less about self and more about others.
And so they ask or look around for non-profits and advocacy groups to volunteer for. Others form new ones together with their best buds. Amazing acts of kindness and civic duties. Some go to cancer wards. Others go to indigenous peoples.
There was also a time when entire offices were engrossed with relief operations, post-disaster. Complete with marketing 360 efforts to drum up public interest.
Not a few go to churches and faith-based programs because they’re almost always open and eager to accept volunteers, donors and supporters. And there’s a community of like-minded people who would welcome you.
Now, whatever you think about the groups they choose to affiliate is secondary to what they want to do individually. Which is to fill a gaping void in their hearts and minds. That void is social in nature. They don’t crave for attention while they do that. They just want to help.
So whether it is CSR project or a cancer ward-related event, please show respect for those individuals who went out of their way to express their social affinity with the intended beneficiaries. We actually need more such opportunities and openings for working people.
