Two really important and inter-related features from @michaelholder today. First up, corporate demand for renewables is likely larger than you think and growing fast businessgreen.com/bg/feature/306… BG+
And second, new polling from @ClientEarth how remarkably popular such moves are businessgreen.com/bg/analysis/30… BG+
I mean, crazy popular. The stats are well worth looking at in detail. First up, rejection of climate 'scepticism' is overwhelming
Two thirds want the government to do more to address climate risks and over 80% want it to honour the Paris Agreement
Seven in 10 want to join a community energy project, 48% want to switch to greener vehicles right now, and large numbers want solar and energy efficiency measures.
And they are pretty keen on green investments and pretty hostile towards fossil fuels.
It is hard to think of any policy area (besides perhaps more money for the NHS) that has this level of overwhelming support.
Obvious counter argument is it is 'motherhood and sustainable apple pie', that support drops off when short term cost implications are explained. But the challenges of building a green economy have been 'explained' for over a decade, and still support is overwhelming.
Takeaway from all this? If you are a business not pushing against the open door customers are showing you, then what the hell are you doing?
If you are a politico still telling yourself this stuff is not popular and a second tier issue, then what the hell are you doing?
