Yesterday I posted of a great quote by @Tia_Oso from a great interview by @rodimusprime. On the topic of navigating social media as a marginalized group member she said (something like):

"The parameters for what is/isn't considered 'Respectful' are defined by White Men."
Here are two recent examples:
1.) I'm in an Eastern Sierras/395 FB group that allows members to post pictures of Manzanar, with it's beautiful Sierras backdrop, but we CAN'T talk about what actually happened there and/or the obvious parallels with the vilification...
2.) and detention of immigrants that is happening right now. Pointing out that an unhealthy # of the members of our mostly-white group, are currently cheering on similar human rights atrocities wouldn't be "respectful."
3.) This same group also won't allow discussion of the current efforts by the Trump administration to despoil it of resources, the effect of global warming on wildfires etc. You see, it wouldn't be "respectful" to discuss ongoing threats to the mountains...just look at pretty pix
4.) Second example: A woman posted in a local Altadena FB page warning that her neighbor, a white man, is calling the police every time a car alarm goes off. Given the scourge of excessive calls to the police by white people endangering Black and non-black people-of-color...
5.) she thought it right to warn the community and shame the guy. She posted his PUBLIC profile picture that he chooses to be public. The group became outraged that she would dare suggest that this guy is enabling racist over-policing.
6.) The mostly white group members predictably ran to his defense with What If scenarios to justify what he is doing.
7.) Eventually the Admin of the group deleted the post because calling someone the R-word is apparently a much greater evil than jeopardizing the lives of marginalized people.
8.) All of this in the context where we have had a recent, gross incident of a white man calling the cops on a Black woman in a hotel pool (Pasadena) and an unarmed Black man from Altadena, severely beaten by the PPD.
