(1) OK here's the drill. I'm a hurricane watcher. I care (a lot) about best practices for households and officials in prepping, response & recovery. I've read the odd thing or two about it. (/sarcasm)

I will be holding Hawaii officials to account for tweets that mislead people.
(2) Don't tell me that if you and I don't live in Hawaii, then we can't know what are the best ways to try and save lives from Hurricane Lane.

People tried that shtick with me during Harvey, Irma and Maria last year.

I survived an earthquake that killed 185 people.
(3) I also have extensive (many years) experience in large organizations that had to plan & respond to major disasters affecting hundreds of thousands of people. It's challenging work, but there are professionals who know their stuff. They should be listened to.
(4) As an earthquake survivor, I encourage everyone, wherever you live, to get ready for natural & other disasters while you can.

>Learn what the hazards are in your area
>Prep your household accordingly
>Lobby officials to do their job properly.

(5) I love the USA. Some cities/areas have officials who are better at emergency management than others are. In 2017, I witnessed A+ work by the governors of TX, FL, PR, AL, GA, and SC. They listened to professional advice & did their part well.
(6) I gathered evidence of problems caused by the Mayors of Houston, Miami, and San Juan. My hard drive's US politics folder collection is now bigger than Ben Hur. So, it's hard to bring up the evidence now, but if I have to do it, I can.
(7) Today I tweeted about advice given by the Mayor of Honolulu today (the day before Lane will strike.) I shall explain this, since I have already been misunderstood by some.
(8) The link in the Mayor's tweet contains good safety info. But, as we all should know by now, some people will only read the tweet. A Mayor's duty is to help everyone, even if they don't prep well.

(9) "Please shelter in place when possible" means stay in your home & if it gets bad, try to evacuate during 125mph winds &/or flash flooding that can reach the eaves of your home in minutes.

Some people died this way in Houston.
(10) The message should have been crafted in a way that reflects each householder needing to assess their unique risks before deciding to stay or go.

Messages given before Harvey, Irma and Maria urged people to evacuate early or at least call a helpline for advice.
(11) I've called out other tweets for creating a false sense of security with the dreaded terms:

>downgraded
>weakened
>pass by (instead of direct hit,) etc

When will officials learn? It's so frustrating.

A Cat 3 storm will likely kill, if people don't prepare well.
(12) I know that even people who read this thread will still try to argue with me about these fact-based professional best practices. Fine.

At least the open minded will learn something, and I'll have a thread link I can use as a reply.

I just want help save lives.
