I think it's pretty cool that in 1477 was a woman named Julian Rawson who was a member of the Worshipful Cutlers of Ldn. Here she is paying for her apprentice, John Baylly. I like to envision Julian using a sword forged by her own hands to boss around John B. (Guildhall MS 7146)
And here she is the following year, taking on *another* apprentice, Edmund Terry. Way to go, Julian! I salute you,

Medieval manuscript lesson of the day: anti-theft edition! Here's an inventory of books from St Paul's Cathedral Library, written up in 1458. It is written in the form of n indenture, with wavy lines at the edge. Explanation in the next tweets. (BL Cotton Charter xiii.2)
Two identical copies were drawn up then cut along this line, each held by a different individual (probably the two chaplains responsible for overseeing the library). At a given time, a chaplain would be asked to show this inventory next to its copy for a shelf audit.
This helped identify books missing from the shelves. The wavy lines ensure that the copies brought together were those written at the same time and are exact copies. This prevented the chaplain from forging a copy of the inventory which might leave off any books he had stolen.

I like to collect examples of blurbs that praise an author for resembling other Great Artists, all of whom are always male. #GreatWriteMale
Turn to the back of any modern novel, and this is how the publisher signals that This Is a Work of Merit.
Aside from being sheer nonsense (and kind of a diminishment of the author being praised), all it does is perpetuate the idea that the models worth emulating are men.

U.S. Sen. John McCain deserves praise for promoting racial, religious tolerance and civility, especially inside a political party that often had intolerant leaders. McCain often criticized bigotry and tried to tamp down extremism. And it was seen in his personal interactions.
Here is one example of US Sen. John McCain’s expression of tolerance, from last year. And during the 2008 campaign, he would tell crowds not to hate Obama or make irrational, bigoted remarks about him:
In Jan. 2008, I attended a campaign rally with Sen. John McCain in Clawson, MI. I asked him about concerns some had about his rhetoric on "radical Islam."
He told me: "I want to assure the Muslim community in Michigan & around this country that we respect an honorable religion."
