Can we talk about how better, more available education and the availability of work for a livable wage solves many of the subsequent issues we spend billions on to fix where these things are lacking?

I know it's not as sexy as arguing extremes, but it's a better use of time.
Mental health in general becomes more stable. When people are more mentally stable, they tend to steer clear of drug abuse, violence, and criminal activity than if they're not.

Treating mental health is vital, but working on the causes of mental health issues is arguably more so
Violence of any kind, not just gun violence, is almost always rooted in something that was solvable before it got to that point. That doesn't always mean unjustifiably strict gun laws, but it also doesn't mean reasonable gun laws won't be of help.
Violence isn't something to be solved so much as it is something to be mitigated. Improving education, ensuring proper jobs, promoting a work/life balance, and providing mental health care are the generations-long foundation required to work towards that mitigation.
I personally believe that gun availability should be reduced across the board but others may not agree and that's ok. I think standardized gun laws would help cross-board issues between states etc. I think simply being more on top of legal guns is better than not being so.
Across the country registry, background checks, mental health checks every so many years, required training, deferred sale of weapons, all could be part of a system built to keep the 2nd amendment safe while homogenizing gun laws across state lines to bolster the effort.
I get that the states are meant to handle their own affairs for many policies such as gun control, but perhaps it's time to rethink that equation.

Either way, I am firmly in the camp of attempting to solve the root cause above all else, but not ignore the issues of the now.
