This is a great column. Which makes it all the more infuriating that in the "read more" section, there's a link to Michael Anton's racist anti-birthright citizenship piece (which is proven to be based on fabricated evidence). Do better, @washingtonpost

I mean, seriously, @washingtonpost: Anton makes an argument based on Nazi legislation, and in doing so also gets his key constitutional claims wrong, AND "proves" his thesis with a quote selectively-edited to read like the opposite of what it really said.
The fact that the @washingtonpost hasn't retracted that vile editorial and apologized for publishing inaccurate propaganda is bad enough. Linking to it under Eugene Robinson's column is just despicable. Democracy may die in darkness, but it can also be killed by lazy-ass editors.

I'm so angry after reading this. Our profession keeps self-immolating by driving some of its most interesting and talented practitioners out, as we've done for decades. All because man-babies are threatened by intelligent, accomplished women.

As a male historian, I know I can and should do more to fight sexism and misogyny in our field, and in academe. We all have to, because it is intolerable that some of the people who are doing *great* work, and who are *great* scholars and colleagues, are being treated like this
I hope this post challenges you, as it did me, to think very hard about what more you can do to fight this. Start by believing women, and continue by being an ally and a voice when needed. The whole time, don't be like the people in this article's cases.

Someone linked me to this tweet and accompanying image, and you know, it’s nice of the guy to link to the accompanying source so you can easily prove him wrong.
To start with, the language. This does not say that children born in the United States to foreigners and aliens are not citizens—which is what anti-birthright citizen folk claim.

It says that people born in the United States who are foreigners and aliens are not citizens.
If you were born in the United States, and you give up your US citizenship and become a citizen of another country, you are not a US citizen.

That’s why the speaker treats this case as “simple” and says it easily decides who is and isn’t a citizen.

It’s Saturday Evening. Time for some Bible talk. I got up this morning, and, as I usually do, checked my iPhone for today’s verse of the day. It was a good one. (Aren’t they all?)
Prov 13:20 “Walk with wise people and become wise; befriend fools and get in trouble.” My first thought was, “How true.” It’s often said, you are known by the friends you keep. And it’s true. Because, who you hang out with determines your attitude.
I see it in my wife every time we go home to visit. Suddenly she’s just like her sisters. You can’t even tell them apart by the words they speak. Yet she never behaves that way when we’re not with the family.

I’ll preface this brief rant on #birthright #citizenship by saying that, for personal, political and religious reasons, I do not identify as a Republican or a Democrat. I believe that as a Christian and pastor I must remain engaged — but not aligned.
Over the past decade, I have become increasingly selective about which issues I will weigh in on in a public forum. As a rule, I’ll avoid almost all discussions of electoral politics in the U.S. or in any of the other five countries in which I serve.
I do, however, feel completely free to discuss and debate policies and perspectives that affect orphaned and vulnerable kids, and I have praised — and criticized — politicians and pundits Democrat and Republican when they help or harm at-risk children.

If you report this story any other way you are not reporting the facts or being objective.

If you think this is an extreme position or an opinion, you haven't read enough about the white nationalist movement, Stephen Miller, Bannon, Sessions, etc.

Eliminating birthright citizenship is a central plank in a well-articulated, coherent movement to make America whiter.

Blaming Soros is a central tool. It is part of a (crazy, wrong, but internally coherent) theory of the case:
- By nature, people can only form society with their closer kin.
- Yadda Yadda (the arguments are terrible) White people have certain values that non-whites don't.

But that shouldn't lead us too neglect this part.
