I just published “Programming Languages are not Languages” medium.com/p/programming-…
In this article I discuss how some linguistic concepts like the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis apply (or doesn't) to programming languages.
9 years ago back in China I was all about learning new languages and paradigms, Erlang, Haskell, Clojure, J. I think all these years of thinking are finally paying off.
Erlang was the language that definitely changed my life. It literally allowed me to get a working permit here in Switzerland! Then I got my job at @RabbitMQ, where I wrote a book, started doing conference speaking…
Here's 8 years ago in Shanghai, when @FrancescoC told me to "focus on RabbitMQ and Erlang", in hindsight one of the top advices I had in my career. You can also see @krzycube there, an Erlanger from China.

I learnt Erlang from @joeerl's book. Studied Haskell from Real World Haskell & learnyouahaskell.com Clojure back then was mostly reading blog posts, and source code. JLang had great docs, plus @kaleidic was always there to provide advice.
But I think if you want to grasp the importance of learning multiple programming paradigms the book "Concepts, Techniques, and Models of Computer Programming" is probably one of the bets resources out there. info.ucl.ac.be/~pvr/book.html
