My daughter is reading another book right now, so I've started on Kip Thorne's Black Holes & Time Warps.

To think that Einstein just *figured this stuff out*, sans any physical experiments, makes my brain hurt.
I mean, he basically said "Newtonian physics is wrong" which, at the time, was as crazy as when people said Heliocentrism was how things actually worked. However, once the mind understands there is no fixed point in the 'aether', relativity just starts making so much sense.
I haven't even gotten into the black hole stuff yet and it's absolutely fascinating to see the history behind one of the greatest scientific breakthroughs of all time.

Again, thanks to @sarahsalviander who now will be burded with me pinging her all kinds of black hole questions

My training in atomic structures back in the early 90's was still based on the Bohr model, which explains why I'm having to relearn most of it now. Interesting to see 'shells' are still correct, just not necessarily in the spherical shape I was taught. #LoveToLearn
Did a few hours of YouTube videos & Wikipedia reading on how the atomic orbitals are structured last night. While it's new information, it meshed with what I was taught insofar as energy levels & whatnot.
While I'm happy being a programmer, part of me wonders if I could have made a bigger difference in the world studying physics, something my brain is attuned to for some reason.

Geek thread -

A free electron doesn't spin around a nucleus, but as soon as it hops back into a covalent shell.... it starts its blurry little cloud dance.

Where does that energy come from?
I know the electron itself has a spin. When it is knocked off the covalent shell, does it absorb the energy from its previous orbit & store it as more spin?

I know when it's excited into another level & drops, it emits a photon, but what about when it's completely pulled out?
Or am I thinking of the electron wrong? Is it always a cloud of probability, even when not attached to a covalent shell?

Finally got some time on the CNC last night. I need to completely tear it down & put it back together. The wheels are just not tight enough & the flex is pretty bad at times.
I want to upgrade the Z Axis to something stiffer & maybe switch to a ball screw motion rather than belts, but I keep thinking the aluminum rails are still the weak point in the whole system.
Not sure at what point it makes more financial sense to just buy a new CNC, but I don't have the $ to do that anyway.

1. "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House" by Michael Wolff. Yes, I hate-read this book in a matter of days. Problematically, Bannon comes across as an articulate, insightful source and not an arch nationalist parasite. Will Wolff's depiction be hagiography in the future?
2. "The Invention of the White Race, Volume 1: Racial Oppression and Social Control" and "The Invention of the White Race, Volume 2: The Origin of Racial Oppression in Anglo-America" by Theodore Allen. Who knew how important Bacon's Rebellion (1676) was to the history of racism?

Many Iranians criticised one of BBC Farsi’s journalists for her comments on Iran-Hezbullah relations. Some have even threatened her that she won’t be allowed to go back to Iran after the fall of the regime. Many Iranians believe some of @bbcpersian journalists support the regime.
In the past few days some anti-BBC slogans have been chanted by the protesters in Iran. In a comment one of BBCFarsi journalist claims that ‘Trump wants to turn Iran into another Syria by starting a civil war etc’. The same propaganda which is pumped out by Iranian state media.
Some of @BBCPersian journalists block anyone who criticises them. One of its journalists in particular has publicly supported A.Khamenei on his social media pages. I have written to a few MPs and the BBC about. Will see if BBC is interested in opening an investigation.

It's #StargateAlive time! I was the scientist, so if you watched the show you know my handwriting really, really well. All that math? Legit real physics, although often modified to function in a fictional setting.
I had cheatsheets of my actors' handwriting so I could mimic it well enough to do "Finish this equation" props (like this notebook for @dhewlett blending solar flares & black holes & time travel). #StargateAlive
Other times, I'd be the one creating cheatsheets for my actors to reference to make sure they didn't slip in extraneous factors of 2 (naughty naught!) #StargateAlive
