JC's statement here was unwise politically because it was guaranteed to muddy the water further: it could be read in very different ways, which is a bad start, especially in this moment where clarity, precision and care was needed. >>
E.g., "Anti-Zionism is not in itself antisemitic". I personally don't know what is "Anti-Zionism in itself": there were historically many meanings to the term "anti-Zionism", and unless you actually spell out what you mean, it's too vague to be useful >>
it's not "antisemitic ... to support another solution [than 2states] to the Israel-Palestine conflict". Correct: much of the Israeli political spectrum rejects a meaningful two-state-solution (although that's not what Corbyn meant obv). >>
Given that a Palestinian state is unlikely to be established, we should all consider other solutions. But some would read JC's call as "legitimising calls for the annihilation of Israel". Given the state of the discourse, one should anticipate such readings. >>
There is a real question on how discourse on Palestine will be affected by the current AS debate. There are reasons to be concerned. This document probably wouldn't have helped, because it can be read in such different ways.
