Don't think it is that hard for smart managers to learn enough data science to identify optimal techniques for a given problem.

As long as they can delegate data plumbing and model optimization

Coding is the challenge
And most managers in most firms (at least in India) come from an engineering background. So understanding algorithms, and even supervising analysts who code is not that hard for most.

But the challenge arises when the managers are expected to code themselves, and actually get dirty with the data. That's where most back out.

It's very hard to do that if you haven't been hands on for a while, and you have other responsibilities
I can tell from personal experience how even extremely smart managers who have coded for years can't do anything more than basic Excel once they have been in people leadership / client management positions for 3-4 years.

It is very hard, unless coding is a passion for you
