Today a Dr (pediatrician) with 5 years of experience in the field was expressing the pain he is undergoing to me , I was taken aback at few of his observations. Let me share them with you here.
He has done his MD paediatrics first few years he spent in a private hospital toiling 18 to 20 hour work shifts , even on sundays he was not given a break. So he quit , then he joined a corporate hospital, he was offered 80 K / month salary , he was happy
Within a short time the corporate hospital gave him a monthly target to earn Rs 4 lakhs. He argued with the hospital admin, how can I generate this revenue , he was told do as many diagnostic tests as possible , even healthy patients were to be hospitalised , he couldn't stand it
He quit & started his own practice , he says flow of patients is controlled by local pharmacies, patients go straight to the pharmacy , ask the pharmacist medicines & instead of paying the Dr, they buy medicines for that price & cut costs
On the other hand the pharma companies were giving tempting packages, RIMP Dr's , pharmacies act as sourcing agents for hospitals , each gets a commission for sending a patient to the hospital. A well oiled network to source & exploit patients.
Now he says he gets 5 to 10 patients a day , with a consultation fee of RS 100 per patient , he is finding difficult to make ends meet. He says " After doing MD & 5 years experience in find it tough to take Rs 500 home " .
He says " iam undergoing this because I want to follow ethics, I studied medicine considering it as a Nobel profession, but on the ground it's pure business & exploitation"
