I read this and find myself agreeing with about 80%.
- Antisemitism a serious problem which Labour hasn't dealt with properly
- Jewish communal orgs have sometimes overreacted and there is a pressure to do so
- Israel-Palestine wd have been issue anyway
20% I'm not sure about...
- @BoardofDeputies was in fact cautiously optimistic and opened the door after IHRA adoption (bod.org.uk/labour-nec-ado…) so did exactly what Levy suggested, but he doesn't mention that
- This line doesn't make sense ...
"Long ago the Jewish establishment drew a line within the community on fundamental dissent regarding Israel and Zionism. Those same dissidents happen to be the British Jews with whom Jeremy Corbyn is most familiar"
- Is there a clause missing? Which dissidents?
- Ultimately, this summer has been a wake up call not really for the right of the Jewish community but for the centre. Wreath-gate, Irony-gate, IHRA-gate - not signs that Corbyn is moving or seeking to " better understand the kishkes, the guts of the British Jewish community"
- There is a tiny whiff of victim blaming in the article. It's not in the overreaction sections, it's in the appeal to "Corbyn’s most comprehensive response to date", no real analysis of whether that means anything more than previously, and I'm not sure it does
- tbf Levy is saying essentially what I was saying a few months ago, that the Jewish community needs to keep the lines open, to ensure that if there is or there may be willing within the leadership to make a real go of sorting it out, that can be reciprocated.
- But, personally, the actions of the summer have made me less hopeful that is possible, though carefully watching how Corbyn himself has responded to the various issues, though for some reason Levy appears to still think there is a real chance. I'm just not sure.
