Exclusive story by @openDemocracy tonight, which could turn very interesting 🤫😉

The UK Parliament watchdog is now probing Jacob Rees Mogg’s hard Brexit lobby group (the ERG) over its "other sources of funding"

The ERG received ‘research funds’ (paid out of MPs’ expense claims, and therefore ultimately funded by the taxpayer) from the offices of:
Michael Gove, Sajid Javid, Andrea Leadsom, Penny Mordaunt, Chris Grayling, David Gauke and David Davis.
But it turns out the ERG has a SECOND bank account that it did not inform IPSA, the Parliamentary watchdog, about.

Is the newspaper turning against Rees-Mogg? 😉

I'm a strong and committed Remainer.

But I also think it's a mistake to force Jeremy Corbyn to commit to a second Referendum on Brexit. Labour members shouldn't go down that road.

Here's why:
If Corbyn says he is committed to a second Referendum *before* Theresa May's deal has been voted on, it will be a disaster.

Why? Two reasons:
First, May will immediately accuse him of helping the EU and trying to wreck Brexit. It will unite all Tories (ensuring her deal goes through).

Secondly, it will allow her to say Labour were always angling for No Deal, and are to blame from fallout of No Deal.

So this is Rod Liddle in the Spectator (apparently the *leading* magazine of the UK right), writing about how it's SO difficult to avoid being racist.

Let's talk about Rod Liddle's own history, since its not that well known.
In 2010, Rod Liddle blamed black people for "the overwhelming majority of street crime, knife crime, gun crime, robbery and crimes of sexual violence in London"

Ok. *deep breath* a thread on Labour and Brexit. ⬇️

As a strong Remainer I find it odd when fellow Remainers attack the Labour leadership (Corbyn / McDonnell) for not being against Brexit enough. Its unnecessary and misguided. Here's why
1) The Corbyn/McD stance is classic Triangulation. (Yes, the t-word is back!)

Of course they won't admit to it. But leadership don't want to lose the mostly working-class-vote that are strong Leavers. Will they attract Tory Remainers to replace them? Seems doubtful.
And the quickest way to annoy its Leavers is by telling them their vote didn't count.

For the Labour leadership, Brexit is not a concern as big as transforming the economy. THAT is the project they are building a coalition of voters for.

2/ Tory Brexiters have repeatedly called for regulations to be slashed, that means health, safety, food and environmental regulations. Often this is couched in terms of the requirements for a trade deal with the US. We all know about chlorinated chicken.
3/ Right-wing think tanks including leading Brexiter MEP Daniel Hannan's IFT and the US Cato Institute called for the NHS to be opened to foreign competition and a bonfire of consumer and environmental regulations

Another boring #Brexit thread.

1. People are right to observe that the EU does flex its own rules but very often when it does it is invoking emergency measures or articles inside a particular legal framework. That, though, cannot extend to #Brexit.
2. When the UK leaves it will become a third country. Standard third country treatment will apply. That new relationship could evolve to include further customs cooperation but it would have to be part of a formal agreement.
3. What the EU is not going to do is enter any agreement that compromises its own legal order. Any agreement allowing the free(ish) movement of goods would mean that any UK regulatory divergence would have to be supervised and mutually agreed.

So, @Jacob_Rees_Mogg has had a go at Sir John Major for being part of the European elite because of #Brexit. I think it is probably the time to tell a little story about JRM, how he acts and what people think of him. Are you sitting comfortably...?
Back in the day, I started out as a research assistant at Scottish @Conservatives Central Office. As you’d imagine, I’ve a lot of stories I could tell but, sadly for you, you’ll never hear them. However, JRM has provoked this with his comments about Sir John.
Back in 1997, @Jacob_Rees_Mogg was the Tory candidate for Central Fife. His passage into the seat was helped by the powers that be so that he could follow the time-honoured path of so many with the right connections of fighting some unwinnable seats before being given a safe one.
