Advice for first-time founders: Don’t build a service for other startups.

I know it’s tempting. It’s fun. You know the market. You understand the problem. You enjoy talking to your customers.

Problem: Every founder thinks this way so there’s A TON of competition.
Instead try and solve a problem for another domain you have experience in that other founders are less likely to touch.

A simple SaaS for SMB’s can be a great way to learn the ropes.
Full disclosure: I built @BetaList, @AllStartupJobs, @wipchat, @Request4Startup, etc 😂
What’s insidious about startups-for-startups is that your peers are more likely to cheer you on (or even invest) as they can relate to the product, and the relative ease with which you can get PR from tech pub’s suggests you’re on the right track which isn’t necessarily true.
It is a lot of fun though + can be a great way to expand your network.

But as far as businesses go, you are making it harder for yourself than needed if you go that route.
I guess I’m not saying definitely don’t do it, but rather: consider the alternatives before going for the obvious approach of building a tool for other startups.
