Today is the 10th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act, which reinstated Congress’ inclusive definition of disability after the Supreme Court narrowed the definition—Democrats and Republicans coming together to benefit over 61 million Americans!
Ten years ago, Congress needed to act to preserve the definition of disability; bi-partisan efforts with the disability and business communities resulted in the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act.
A great example of Democrats and Republicans protecting the civil rights of over 61 million Americans.

I commend @GovernorTomWolf for taking bold action to address climate change in Pennsylvania. He recognizes that our state and our workers have the ability to confront a changing climate and grow our economy.
These greenhouse gas reduction goals will position our businesses and workers to create new, good-paying jobs that bolster economic growth and ensure the air we breathe is cleaner.
The federal government should follow Pennsylvania’s example by rejoining the Paris Climate Accords and finally taking direct action on climate change.

President Trump shut down the government to force the construction of a wall that security experts say won’t work. A concrete or steel wall is not border security.
Instead of continuing his shutdown, President Trump should commit to signing the Republican bills passed by the Democratic House that would reopen the government and secure the border with over $1 billion in funding.
Once the government is reopened, Congress should have a substantial debate on how to fix our broken system and begin work on legislation that mirrors the bipartisan 2013 comprehensive immigration reform bill.

President Trump doesn’t seem to get it. He’s not getting a concrete or steel wall along the width of the border- never, ever, ever, ever.
I, along with Democrats in Congress, want to actually fix our immigration system through comprehensive reform that secures the border and provides a pathway to citizenship for immigrants.
The 2013 comprehensive immigration bill got 68 Senate votes. It provided $40 billion to secure the border and included a pathway to citizenship for immigrants.

The Justice Department today announced its Election Day plans for the Nov. 6, 2018 general election. The Civil Rights Division will monitor compliance with the federal voting rights laws by deploying personnel to 35 jurisdictions in 19 states.
“Voting rights are constitutional rights, and they’re part of what it means to be an American,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions said. “The Department of Justice has been entrusted with an indispensable role in securing these rights for the people of this nation.

Today in #FatStudyGroup, we reading Chs9-10 of Solovay, S. (2000). Tipping the scales of justice. Amherst, New York, USA: Prometheus Books.
In the ninth chapter, Solovay reviews how weight often intersects with other (usually protected) categories, such as gender and/or race. She provides several examples of cases where this has occurred, and how the courts have negotiated the issue.
In the longest chapter in the book, Ch10, Solovay considers whether fat people should find protection under existing disability laws. She begins by noting how contentious this idea is, both in the fat activist community and in the disability community.

Today in #FatStudyGroup, we are reading Chs 7-8 of Solovay, S. (2000). Tipping the scales of justice. Amherst, New York, USA: Prometheus Books.
In chapter seven, Solovay asserts the importance of (and right to) being judged by one’s peers; and yet, fat people can be dismissed from serving on a jury because of their weight in the US.
She argues, "Excluding fat people from juries because of weight is inequitable. It denies fat defendants the Constitution’s guarantee of an impartial jury...It prevents fat people from contributing to the important mechanism of justice because of stereotypes & prejudice” (p. 97).
